The dogs don't seem as concerned about the corner of the garden as they were. I am going to keep my eye on it, if it seems like they are back I'll speak to her next door. I don't think my husband would allow me to have an air rifle! 🤭
When I was talking to our neighbour at the start of all this she said that she had been speaking to a friend of hers who lives in on a farm in Scotland. They've used live bait boxes in the past and then drowned the rats. It sounds awful.
Our previous cat was a good ratter. If there was a nest, he’d bring back one dead baby rat a night (clean kill, back of the neck) & finally the adults. Current cat isn’t bothered.
There are rodent detection dogs in NZ, that indicate rat presence (the dog is muzzled); part of the program to eradicate the non-native pests that eat the ground nesting birds’ eggs. Not used here, as far as I know. But the rats in our garden climb into bushes so I guess they could get to birds nests too.
