They can! 'Do Not Disturb' is a standard feature on Android. Can't remember which version of Android introduced it but I've been successfully using it for quite a while! A number of apps are also available for other automated actions based on time or location.

The whole point is, even a smart phone needs an OS, which will go out of date just the same as a tablet or computer.
Why struggle with the tiny screen and buttons of a smart phone just for access to the internet?

It hasn't been suggested that you do away with a computer just for access to the internet.
The point is that if your current operating system won't allow access to online banking and you need to upgrade your computer to facilitate it then it is far far cheaper just to buy a cheap smartphone to gain access and, as the vast majority have a mobile phone, then the smartphone could be used to fulfil both functions.

Just put the phone onto Silent mode when you don’t want to be disturbed - during a meal or a live concert or overnight. It’s only the flick of a switch on the iPhone.

Fine if you have a smart-phone, but what about those like me that don't. Several of my friends in the same age group don't have mobile phones at all.

I know I'm certainly not going to go out and buy a smart-phone that I don't otherwise need. They cost more money to buy than I can afford, then they cost money to run. My current mobile only costs me money if I use it to make a call or send a text. Using my laptop to access my bank account costs me nothing apart from the electricity is uses when it is plugged in and switched on.

Colin, you have made it clear you don't want to upgrade windows and you dont want to have a smartphone, and those are both your choices to make, good luck to you. However you cannot then complain if options like online banking are not available to you in the future. It would be rather like turning up at a car dealership and asking for the latest model of car with a starting handle instead of a key or button, its just not made any more.

I also must correct your suspicion that OS upgrades are not made in part to improve security. I have worked in IT for 3.5 decades and in that time tech has made enormous strides. Hackers also. Increased computing power means hackers can use algorithms that wouldnt have run decades ago, hence security improvements are being made all the time. If you have an OS that is no longer supported you are running a risk of being hacked, and that is the truth. It might never happen ..... but on the other it just might.

Surely with a smart-phone you need some kind of monthly contract with a provider? If I went for PAYG I would have thought there would still be some kind of monthly charge. I very much doubt whether my current mobile deal would be transferable. It hasn't been available for years now and I bet Virgin would love to get me off it. I have no monthly charges at all so all I ever pay for is calls and texts. So far this year it has cost me under £10.
No, you can use your current number and deal on any new phone. Although most companies advertise new phones and expensive contracts together theres no reason you have to do it that way, you can just buy an unlocked phone on its own. You might have to get your provider to send a new sim card for the same number as a new smartphone will likely use a smaller sim.
btw, presumably you are already paying a hefty monthly bill for wifi, its worth checking if there are any add on deals for monthly mobile phone charges alongside that wifi, some of them can be quite cheap that way.

My broadband contract with Plusnet ends in January & I am finishing it. Why pay £20pm for something I barely use anymore ? My iPhone does it all. Everything. I can even print from it without WiFi. It does my banking & card payments in shops & online. Apple wallet does not keep card details on phone. When you make a payment the shop card reader communicates through your phone to your bank to authorise the payment. I pay £6pm for Plusnet sim only with unlimited calls/txts & 7gb of data which does me.

Yes I still keep my wallet in my other pocket with cards & cash in but I can’t remember when I last opened it.

When online banking is no longer available on Win7, if that ever actually happens, I'll probably switch to using Zorin or another Linux O/S. They are readily available free, and I already have a desktop computer running Zorin which I am experimenting and learning with. I have absolutely no intention of becoming a slave to Microsoft or giving them any more of my dosh. Especially for an O/S that from what I have heard gives them ready access to my computer. If my bank stops allowing me to use online banking I'll just switch banks to one much nearer home and go back to what I did for years before online banking came along. If they want me to use a smart-phone I'll just ask them to provide me with one if they want my custom. Failing that I'll just use cash for everything. I very much doubt whether that option will become unavailable in my lifetime, although it may do one day.

That day is fast approaching, less than 1 in 6 payments are cash and there are already businesses large and small that only accept card payments.

I would never have my bank details on any cell phone. Bad enough the contactless limit being increased to £100!

Quite agree about not having bank details on a phone, I wouldn't either.

If you don't want to be disturbed between certain hours, what's wrong with turning it off? My (ordinary) mobile is normally switched off when I come home, and if my landline rings after I go to bed I can't hear it when I'm upstairs.

Quote Which:
Is mobile banking safe?
The biggest threat to banking security comes from using a compromised device. And this applies whether you’re using a computer or a smartphone. Although phones are more easily lost or stolen, apps are in some ways safer than using a computer to log in to your bank account. This is because apps in the official app stores are vetted by Apple and Google, whereas PCs can run software from any source. It's also more difficult to plant a keylogger in an Android or iOS device.
