Interesting posts on Royal Navy ships. I come from a Navy family, Grandfathers, father and uncles, all serving during wartime, I have service records and discharge papers, some on parchment. I never wore Blue, opting for a stint in Green.
An everlasting memory for me, was seeing and, in a very small way, being part of the Review of the Fleet in Torbay, July 1969, seeing all those ships, including HMS Eagle, lit up at night was a sight etched in my mind. I was in the Torquay Sea Scouts, and we were part of the guard of honour for the Royal party, including the Queen and Princess Ann, when they came ashore at Torquay harbour. They walked right past us, smiling and chatting to the odd person, not me sadly…….Yes, I am getting on a bit!
There is a clip on You Tube, watching it makes me feel old!

I also love Greece, been to around 2 dozen Greek islands and toured mainland Greece and its ancient sites, it’s fascinating. Not really sure what a “lot” of countries is, my meagre 30 odd was put into context by a gent I was pulling Ragwort with just last week, in his 70s and has visited 93 countries, my wife’s stepsister is around 70 countries visited, that is a lot in my book.
But it is funny how we differ, because I have absolutely no need, want, desire or inclination to visit London ever again. If I am honest, no British city does it for me. I guess living a very rural life has conditioned me to my surroundings, making me feel out of my comfort zone in towns or cities. Pathetic really, but that is how it is.
I had to go into Newton Abbot yesterday to get an International Driving Permit, a small Devon market town, I had to have a long warm up, about a week! I just hate towns, so it was drive in, park, do what I had to do and out as quickly as possible, back to the foothills of Dartmoor……Heaven. A visit to a Costa would be a punishment!
I am not untraveled, and have been to a fair few cities, New York, Athens, Lisbon, Bordeaux, Paris, Cape Town, Singapore, Wellington, Cairns, Maputo, Perth, Darwin, Melbourne, Dar es Salaam, Prague, Budapest, Hong Kong, Adelaide, Brisbane, Miami, Madrid, Sydney and Auckland off the top of my head, but London is not for me. Difficult to pick a favourite, but Cape Town is right up there, simply stunning place to plonk a city. We are going to the USA next month, a road trip from Montana taking in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, ending up in LasVegas! Vegas, now that WILL be an eye opener for this country boy! 😳
