The question of mandatory testing on m-way driving and mandatory re-testing came up a couple of months ago on another (motoring) forum to which I subscribe. Amongst the points (some from official organisations) were:
M-way testing:
· This would be inherently unfair on drivers living in areas remote from motorways if it were mandatory in the driving test as it would impose additional travel, fuel and accommodation costs. (This came from the Shetland Isles if I remember correctly.)
· An option would be to retain the existing test and require drivers to upgrade to m-way test standard within three (say) years. This would be a complex, bureaucratic system, however, and the timing of the m-way test might still bring additional unfair costs.
Mandatory re-testing:
· Whilst desirable, in practical terms, this could not be logistically achieved at anything less than a 10 year interval given the numbers of existing tests, whether first time, re-sits, or legally imposed re-sits following an offence.
Whilst I'd be delighted if something were done about middle lane hoggers, the roundabout issue is highly contentous for the reasons others have given. Loved your comment, Jeff, about the M8!
