and the general rule for roundabouts is left lane for turning left and the right lane for straight on and right, sometimes this is slightly different in that left lane is left and straight on, and the right lane is right only but as long as you are aware of other drivers around you maintain good lane discipline (yes even if there are no lines!) and make other drivers aware of our intentions there should be no problems.

Whoops, not quite...

Generally the left is used for straight on unless signposted otherwise, certainly according to experience, the highway code and various theory test advice sites.

I would also add that anyone in the north west will probably either be one of the offending middle lane coasters, or tearing their hair out at the sheer number of them occupying the M60/62/6.

The matrix signs need to be brought back into play - a trial scheme that never seemed to keep going was the following:

The Highway Code (Rule 185 - see diagram) appears to disagree, as does this site - "How to proceed at a roundabout/Going ahead..."
I find that the majority of drivers where I live tend to follow what the Highway code says.....
Having said that, I notice that in the Tynside area (where there are roundabouts in abundance), it is common for the right-hand lane to be used for straight ahead - but most road/lane markings indicate this to be done....

I think the matrix signs shown above are still used occasionallt when the Highways Agency seem to be in the mood to display them, but I know from experience they are ignored.

I went down to Enfield today and I didn't see one traffic cop on my travels so to be honest I don't think these laws are going to change much as there's not enough traffic police to enforce them.

Whilst sat in a traffic queue on the A1055 Bullsmore Lane in Enfield this afternoon I lost count of the number of drivers who passed me either not wearing a seat belt, or talking on a hand held mobile. These are already traffic offences but drivers flout the law because they know the chances of getting caught are slim

Drive safely and correctly and its not a problem is it ?

Never had a speeding fine so really dont see what all this cash cow stuff is,dont speed and it wont cost you will it ?

its not that simple, i drive safely and correctly, however, those around me at times do not.

i do agree tho, sad to say, that i think re-testing is the way to go, but it will undoubtedly be a stupid amount of money for the compulsory privelige.

The question of mandatory testing on m-way driving and mandatory re-testing came up a couple of months ago on another (motoring) forum to which I subscribe. Amongst the points (some from official organisations) were:

M-way testing:

·          This would be inherently unfair on drivers living in areas remote from motorways if it were mandatory in the driving test as it would impose additional travel, fuel and accommodation costs. (This came from the Shetland Isles if I remember correctly.)

·          An option would be to retain the existing test and require drivers to upgrade to m-way test standard within three (say) years.  This would be a complex, bureaucratic system, however, and the timing of the m-way test might still bring additional unfair costs.

Mandatory re-testing:

·          Whilst desirable, in practical terms, this could not be logistically achieved at anything less than a 10 year interval given the numbers of existing tests, whether first time, re-sits, or legally imposed re-sits following an offence.

Whilst I'd be delighted if something were done about middle lane hoggers, the roundabout issue is highly contentous for the reasons others have given.  Loved your comment, Jeff, about the M8!
