Quite true, but increased insulation CAN cause more condensation, not always but it CAN.

And there are tens of thousands of houses effected, around the country.

This isnt always a reason NOT to insulate, but it has to be considered when altering your home.

It can be overcome by fitting more ventilation, but this in itself can cause other problems, unless done properly.

Our house has some insulation in the loft, but nothing in the cavities, nextdoor has cavity wall insulation, they have condensation, and we dont. you do the maths.

And who has the larger fuel bills? well its not me.

I am not saying DONT insulate, but make sure it is done properly IF you do. And that means everthing else needed to make the system work.

This isnt a dig at anyone, it is just my opinion, based on MY experiences.

Oops, I seem to have caused a disagreement here - not purposefully.  Everyone's opinion/experience is welcomed as I am now at a loss what to do.

I am considering calling in an expert but how do you find an expert on insulation?   I don't really want to go to the expense of fitting vents in the roof without being absolutely sure this will cure the problem.

The loft hatch is properly sealed, the bathroom extractor is not at fault (hubby has checked it and the pipework running through the loft) so as far as we can tell, there is no warm moist air in the loft space, it's just colder than it used to be.

I also think, from the little research I have done on the net, that this is a common problem and something the insulation companies who are pushing cavity wall and loft insulation know all about - but don't obviously tell the potential customers as this would affect their business

Ventilation is definitely the first thing to do, ridge vents and soffit vents, should be fitted to allow circulation of air through your loft space. Then see how it goes. This should help reduce the problem.

If yours has a gable wall, you could try fitting airbricks, but if you do, please make sure you fit liners between the inner and outer walls, this will help prevent moisture getting into the cavity, which can create other issues.

Start with roof vents, get a trusted builder to assess how many vents you need and go from there. You could even ask your local planning dept,or building inspector, they usually know their stuff and can give advice and technical information.

Thanks for that cbreddie.

We already have air vents in the soffits (the soffits and fascias were replaced about 4 years ago and they were installed at the same time).  I assume the vents go through into the loft space but I'm not sure.  I think they do as the builder we used for the job is very good (always busy/in demand) and his work is of a high standard.

I have spoken to this same builder and asked him to come and give me a price for the job - either air bricks in the gable wall as you sugget or vented roof tiles of some description.  I will also be calling our local building inspector at the council tomorrow to see if they can give some advice.  I wouldn't have thought of that one...thanks.

I really feel like sending the bill to the **!!! insulation company.   Should have stood by my own conviction "nothing in life comes for free."    We live and learn
