The bones sold in shops are cured (or they'd go off!) not the same as a raw bone sold or given to you by the butcher. These will be fresh, with soft cartilage and marrow your dog will enjoy gnawing. These will keep a dog very happy for a few days, they start getting a little whiffy and dogs will try to bury them, all instinct at this stage we remove and replace with a new one.

This is 'cured' ham bone sold in stores, entirely different to raw bones and to be avoided at all costs.

We fed our (show) kittens on a raw diet for a year...Natural Instinct. They had a great start, although being a semi veggie I found it difficult to prepare but they're worth it 17

They' do Natural Instinct for Dogs too.

Some vets stock it, but if you choose to purchase it on line tere is a minimum purchase of about £30.

Your dog will love a raw knuckle bone from the butcher.    

Your dog will love you and so will the local butcher. Use them or loose them. Most butchers will give you the bones for nothing if you buy something while you're there. If you get more than one put them in the freezer until needed.

I remember our labrador of many years ago getting the knuckle off one of those raw bones stuck in the back of her mouth, so actually, not always safe!

I only asked about the shop bones because of the 'not to be given to dogs over 7' comment, but still nobody seems to know why it is different for a dog the day after it turns 7!

As Bailey is already 7 I won't be taking any chances.

We have a 10 month old puppy who really did not want to eat kibble. She picked but never ate enthusiastically and never ate as much as she needed per day.

There were times that she would eat nothing for 3 or 4 days. The vet was adamant that there was nothing wrong with her and she was just a picky eater.

Due to not eating she was vomiting yellow bile as her stomach was always empty.

We spent so much money on different foods, even ordering some from overseas. No joy, her ladyship was not interested. She sniffed, sometimes licked, ocassionally chewed but usually spat it out.

We tried wet food and she ate it, for 3 days.

We tried tripe and yay she ate that, for a week.

By now I was almost bald through tearing my hair out, had no nails as I had bitten them and my nerves were shot.

I was googling dog foods, picky eaters etc and came across something that many people were raging about, a frozen food called Carnibest.

The only thing was that this food is raw.

So we got some and madam loves it !

Our vet is traumatized at the idea of a raw diet but has admitted that the dog looks healthy, has a great coat, bright eyes and is lively, fit and a perfect weight.

And no more vomiting !

So we would definately recommend a raw diet but one made by people who know rather than just throwing raw stuff at a dog.

Contact the manufacturer! My thoughts would be because they are cured they're full of salt and dogs are regarded as getting on a bit from age 7 and therefore not great for kidneys. I could be wrong, just ask manufacturer if you still have the packaging.

I really don't think you're happy with the idea of feeding bones so you can always BARF or raw feeding without bones. Some raw food have ground bones in them, not as good for the teeth but I think you'd be happier.
