I’m still very nervous about going out. We went away in our caravan for a few weeks to mainly very quiet areas and didn’t really come in contact with anyone and used our own caravan facilities so I felt very safe. We did lots of walking and cycling out in the fresh air and it gave me a real lift.

Then, we came home, and reality hit! While we were away (New Forest and Cotswolds) everyone was wearing masks and social distancing etc. The first day after we came home we went to our local M&S Foodhall to get some groceries. The shop was packed and only about half the people were wearing masks. People were pushing past us and reaching over us to get what they wanted from the shelves. It was a real shock to me and I will be doing my best to go out as little as possible. I now understand why the numbers of people infected are increasing rapidly in this area and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some sort of local lockdown here again soon.

It is quite depressing not to be able to live life the way we did before the virus. I miss seeing my students in real life and I am not a big fan of online lecturing but I just have to get on with it. I suppose seeing people online every day is better than nothing but I miss the vibe of being in the University buildings.

Meanwhile, my husbands life has barely changed at all. He is retired and even before the virus spent most of his time pottering in the garden and doing DIY around the house. He is not hugely socially focused and is quite happy at home with me. He gets together once a week for coffee with his sister and brother in his brothers garden and can’t see what all the fuss is about! The only real difference for him is that I am now at home all day to keep him on his toes! His afternoon naps on the sofa are a thing of the past and I have a list of jobs for him to do every week!

I was saying to a group of students on Wednesday that if anyone had told me back in March when lockdown started that we would still be in this position in September, I wouldn’t have believed than. I don’t think many people really expected this to go,on for so long and like me, are getting weary of the whole thing.

Jujitsuelf, I hope you feel a bit more cheerful soon. You will find this forum to be much kinder than many others online. I have left a number of Facebook groups because of nasty people but you rarely find that here which is why I have been a member for 17 years!

I live alone and am retired. With the absence of knitting group, Pilates, quilting group and ukulele bash I feel I am becoming a bit hermit-like, most social interactions being by email or phone. I used to like pottering round the charity shops, picking up the odd ornament, book etc and going out for a cuppa but that doesn't seem wise now. I just nip to the local supermarket at quiet times for what I need; browsing has bitten the dust except for quick dashes to charity shops for reading material, as the library's STILL shut. I have a couple of friends nearby with whom I've had garden cuppas, but that will become less appealing as winter advances, as will pottering round the garden in general.

On the plus side, I'm very lucky that my daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons (7 & 10) live only a few miles away so I'm able to see them regularly, even if hugs are in short supply because we're all being careful, especially since they've gone back to school. If they weren't around things would be a lot more depressing. I'm not as isolated as some, but more isolated than I would like. I really feel for those who are truly isolated, with no end to this problem in sight.

It's hard to keep your spirits up when 'normal life' has gone out of the window, social contacts are lost and you're on your own. You just have to do your best to keep busy (my cupboards have never been so well-organised!) and not be borne down by the relentless flow of information from the media. It's important to get fresh air and exercise if you can; go out for a walk when it's quiet, listen to the birds etc - take all the recommended precautions, of course, but try not to slip into being a prisoner in your own home. Hang in there and stay safe, folks - it's all we can do!

I listened to the question being asked on TV about people not visiting the high street. I'm not a shopper but now and again I like to browse, like you, hedgehugger. And even for the shops that are open, and even when they are quiet and I feel safe enough, the experience is not really a pleasant one. Rushed shopping, masks, social distancing, no music, it is all very dull. We had a meal out last week for a big anniversary, the first pub experience since lockdown in March. I felt safe and the staff couldnt have done more, but still It was a grim experience. So far apart from other diners in a half empty restaurant, masks on when moving about, meant no atmosphere at all. I wont be in any rush to go back despite the safety measures. I do really fear for all the local business and much as I try I struggle to be positive about it all.

Same here. We have been to a city centre once a couple of weeks ago for the usual new school shoes trip, it was my first trip there this year!   It was so grim we were there less than two hours and that included half an hour having a coffee,

We haven't been for any food out. We tried when the deals were on, but they were all too busy. We aren't really pub goers, but are heavily involved with the rugby club. Apart from training and committee meetings we also go there to socialise, watch the sport on TV and catch up with friends, but now we have to book a table and can only leave it to go to the toilet we stay at home.

Pixie, my elder daughter is a senior lecturer in Education and is working at home. Only the PGCE students are on campus. This suits my daughter as she doesn't do much lecturing, but she normally does a lot of 'field work' ,research, presenting papers at seminars etc.. She was was due to speak at conferences in San Francisco and Stockholm, but both were cancelled.

It was a lovely morning so we went to Banff for a walk. Went past the beach and on to the fishmonger in Whitehills. This is where the cables for the Moray East offshore wind farm come ashore. Not far offshoe we watched a large cable laying ship manoeuvre inch by inch between buoys indicating the cable route.

News is not good for large bits of the country, though not here. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we aren't placed in a national lockdown.
However, I tend to think of "Yes Minister" where Sir Humphrey says "never believe anything until it's been officially denied."

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Capt., that Sir Humphrey quote is one I often use! Especially when watching anything political on TV. That old show was one of my favourites, and I believe it is so true.

We've been out this morning getting a few things that we needed. I'm not one who likes to browse in shops anyway, as I only go anywhere near shops when I need something in particular, then I go out to find it. I definitely wouldn't class myself as a consumer, often I will try and fix what I already have rather than buying a new one, unless I have no choice. That's not just under the present circumstances though, it's the way I was brought up. My parents were always very "make do and mend" and I've grown up the same. I actually enjoy fixing things up.

I don't consider myself to be a prisoner in my own home as I know some others do, I just choose not to go out any more than I need to. Both my wife and I are very relaxed about the whole thing really. I've often been told that if I was any more laid-back I'd fall over.

Best Regards,
Colin

For years and years I have been saying I must sort out the attic. Early on in the lockdown I started. It took me around three weeks on and off mainly because it was too hot up there. I had my second knee replacement last October so going up and down the loft ladders was quite a feat.I’m also eighty so age wasn't on my side.Anyway I did it, Everything is now neat and tidy.I sorted out hundreds of photographs and written on them, I also threw a lot away. I have plastic boxes all labelled, some have names on for when I pop off. Everything is now to hand and I know where everything is, I feel quite chuffed and it is a load off my mind.I’ve sorted files and papers. The shredder has worked overtime. My Power of Attorneys have been done and dusted, one for finance and one for health and welfare, The Health and Welfare one was done easily, downloaded the relevant papers off the internet, filled them in, sent them away, cost £82.I’ve started to bake a little and managed for the first time ever to make a Russian Sandwich and now I’m sewing masks to sell for our local hospice. I’m never bored but luckily I have my partner around who has also been busy with DIY.
We live in Greater Manchester and once again we are in semi lockdown. Nobody has been in our house since last March, my children and grandchildren cannot visit but for my birthday next week six of us are going to a restaurant for a meal. We are sitting on separate tables but we will be apart, social distancing adhered to.They can’t come to my garden but we can go to a restaurant, Odd!
Oh! I forgot to mention. Since July 4th we have been away in our caravan for six weeks.Away two weeks, home two weeks and so on. We have been to Lytham St Anne’s,Keswick,Bolton Abbey and we have just come back from Norfolk.
We feel so lucky that we are able to keep going and live life as well as we can. We are just being sensible when we go out. Wear masks where we have to, carry hand sanitiser with us and use it often and keep our distance from others.
I do so hope that those of you who are feeling down soon pick up. I’ve been there and it is so hard to get going again, Give yourself a task to do and get stuck in. Get out and see something different, life still goes on. You can go out to the places you enjoy and still be safe.
Let’s all think like Captain Tom...Tomorrow can only get better, tomorrow is another day.

Respect, Path20! You plucked up courage to tackle the attic/archive project, creating a huge positive outcome from a very negative situation. You must be very pleased. As you say - a weight off your mind.
