"I'm nearer to being a technophobe than a geek, but I've already managed to go through the menu, switch off the GPS option"
The GPS option is not only used to find and log your location, but log you True speed, if a accident happens. The data can be the difference in a he said/he said incident, in relation to speed. Especially if the other person claims you sped up, just before the accident.
The GPS will log true speed, unlike the cars speedometer, which can legally show up to 10% under true speed.
So the cars speedo shows 40mph, it could legally be up to 4mph out. In the event of a accident, the GPS log would show a true speed of 36mph.
