I recall looking at a new Fiat in Norwich showroom which had rust on the tailgate!

As a lad in the late 60s I worked for a Vauxhall main agent, and often did PDIs on new cars. I saw several that had rust on them underneath, and some of them were top-of-the-range models too.

Vw passat estate tsi. this car was horrific i even considered crashing this stain on the automotive world in to somthing to kill it.it used oil like it was a 2stroke the dsg gearbox shuddered between first and second when it changed gear. I hated it every time i got behind the wheel i felt depressed the interior had more plastic than a tuppaware factory.it was cr at p .

Over the last 10-15 years VAG appear to have gone down the route of designing engines and gearboxes and testing them on the masses.

I was victim with an A3 which spent almost 3 months of 2 years ownership having warranty repairs, including a new DSG gearbox.

When warranty claim costs become excessive they do a complete redesign and leave owners of 3+ year old cars to pick up the costs of their mistakes.

Their original 1.6FSi from the early 2000s wasn't too clever. The first 1.4TSi engine was a complete disaster, the dry clutch DSG - as fitted to petrol engines (like the Passat TSi) was hopeless and has now been redesigned for a wet clutch system

Only time will tell if the 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TFsi engines are any better, but I now avoid VAG cars - marketing over reality.
