Hmmm, just checked the Eurotunnel prices for crossings in March 2022 which would cost 130 GBP including the dog, probably cheaper to just get an AHC for our trip in May/June 2022!

Yes, it only makes financial sense if you're already going to be in the EU at booster time.
It basically means having to be in the EU in the same month, every year. I'm not sure we could commit to that, and boosters can't be given much earlier or later.
It's so ridiculous, not accepting that a UK-based vet can administer a booster.
I guess another anomaly is that rabies boosters in the UK are recommended every 3 years, whilst it's every year in the EU. I wonder if the every 3 years boosters will be acceptable for the AHC, going forward, or if we'll have to comply with EU interval thresholds for future AHCs?
I checked with the very helpful DEFRA lady that the 3 year interval was still valid and it is for our dogs’ boosters given in 2020, so we’ve got till 2023 before ours need redoing.
Going forward, who knows?

I think the difference is that your dogs have U.K. issued passports (officially no longer valid for travel into the EU but I believe can still be used to re-enter the U.K. ???) whereas I’m referring to EU issued passports (our dogs are originally from Romania). These can still be used for travel to and from the EU, but only remain valid if the rabies boosters are given by an EU vet. Up to 31st December 2020, U.K. vets still qualified as EU vets, but since then they don’t. For those of us whose dogs have EU issued passports, as long as they remain valid (ie no entries from U.K. vets except regarding tapeworm treatment or animalls being fit to travel) we won’t need an AHC to visit Europe.
Hmmm, I checked Borda's expired pet passport and Bean's current passport, and found they were given different rabies injections.
Borda's vaccine was Nobivac Rabies that has a duration of 3 years; whereas Bean had Rabisin that requires a booster one year after primary vaccination, and then according country guidelines thereafter.
As mentioned by lidds0, it will not be practical to go to France just to have a booster at the same time every year, hey ho!
