'When I made my comments I was more mindful of the people for whom having more children equates to better accommodation and better income at tax payer's expense.' I am in total agreement about this. I just thought as the discussion was about school holidays, that the comments were more about being able to afford holidays when they are expensive. I think sometimes my daughter resents going on holiday in our tourer and would much rather go on package holidays. We did go on package holidays when she was small but now tend to do what pleases us - going in our van. We don't find it too expensive on campsites during holidays and if we did we would use 5 van sites.
All my holidays growing up were in a touring caravan.
I do remember asking if we could one day go abroad, but being told nope, too expensive.
I did go abroad with my boyfriend when I was 18. It was hot. I got sunburned.
I'm sure I moaned a lot as a teenager. Isn't that what teenagers do? But now, I have great memories of my caravan holidays, and it meant that I got LOADS more holidays than all my friends (mum was a teacher, dad was a stay at home dad) because we went away pretty much every holiday except Christmas.
I remember playing monopoly and cards, taking the cushions off the back seats so I could use the hardboard as a little desk to do my colouring on, doing jigsaws, playing tennis with my dad, emptying the toilet with him (one of my favourite jobs when I was little - no idea why, I grew out of this as I got older and just thought it was gross!). Levelling the van. That was only ever a job for me and my dad. My mum was rubbish at it, and if she helped we would all fall out of bed at night it would be on such a slope!
Loads of little memories that are specific to caravan holidays. You don't get that with a fortnight all inclusive in Tenerife.
