All joking aside it is a sad reflection of quality control and/or poor warehouse storage.

Probably the recent documentary showing parcels/packages being thrown about at a sorting centre is an indication of workers just not giving a s%%t about the product they are working with.
Whether its a parcel or a cooker, washing machine etc..?

I am very disappointed with A.O in particular because previous large items I have had from them have been pristine and handled carefully...within my view anyway. I was expecting the cooker to be equally pristine and handled carefully.

On this occasion I watched the delivery man bring the cooker out of the back of the lorry on a sack truck and not having lowered his tailgate quite far enough he then bumped it quite heavily off the edge onto the pavement. I can't say that caused the damage but it probably didn't help. Bearing in mind a cooker is an aluminium box and glass I would have thought they need particularly careful handling even though they are wrapped in a wooden frame and polystyrene. Then, to unpack it they swivel it this way and that on the corners, bumping it down and generally just not taking much care as they simply rip the packaging off. If that is how the delivery men treat items I dread to think how they get bumped around, dropped and knocked about at the warehouse. I am sure they don't leave the manufacturer damaged.

The cooker they are sending today is being shown as a late delivery this evening. Call me a pessimist but I have no doubt it will have been shifted about and rocked and rolled in the back of the van all day...well, it may be the last drop of the day but the delivery men won't get a signature this time until I have inspected every square inch with a magnifying glass!!

Well, you can now run the credits as I think the saga has ended.

New cooker arrived and I was straight out to the van to watch the unloading. I think somebody must have said something to the delivery men because they treated it like china although me watching them like a hawk probably helped in that respect. They lowered it very gingerly off the tailgate onto the pavement and carefully unpacked it.

It wasn't absolutely pristine (I have come to the conclusion nothing ever is) but it was ok. Looks like it has had a knock at the back which has bowed the back panel very slightly at the bottom but nothing major and a very, very, slight dent in the side. One of those dents you can feel but not see much. Everything else was good though...doors both level and opened and closed ok, grill in position where it should be, no cracks or scratches...about as perfect as one can expect.

A very nice man fitted it again and it works a treat...so quick I nearly burnt the toast!

Although I have ended up paying quite a lot more than originally intended I have to say that as far as cookers are concerned the quality is certainly noticeable between the cheaper brands and the more expensive ones.

A happy ending to the saga then Bob so now you can cook away to your hearts content and invite everyone round to taste your talents.

What model did you end up with if it's not being too nosey?

This was the one I finally ended up with, which is strange because when we first started looking my wife said she didn't like graphite but then she saw a silver one she liked, and finally ended up with graphite.

Looks quite expensive and pretty solidly built. Just hope it lasts as long as my old one.

Thank you. I was a little apprehensive as Hotpoint are more famous for washing machines and I wondered if, when I first switched it on, it would jump all round the kitchen floor

They knocked £40 off that price for me but originally I was looking at cookers around £250 so eventually ended up paying £100 more than that, but as I previously said, it is noticeably better quality than the cheaper ones.
