My brother has seen a Vango Venture 500 (I think it is the model before the Tamor) on offer in Go Outdoors for £69.99 but he is concerned that it only has a hydrostatic head of 2000mm where ours is 3000mm. Any advice for him please as I do not really understand it only that the higher the better. Any other recommendations for him for a tent of a similar price and quality. I think for the price it is a good buy personally.
I have several 2000mm tents and they are fine. At the beginning of the school holidays I bought a one man tent from Argos (half price, £24) and a pop-up from millets (£50). Put both up immediately and they have been up throughout all the rain we've had (and there's been plenty here). Both are bone dry.
We bought Lady P a Vango pop-up tent with a 2000mm hydrostatic head - last time out it tiddled down for a whole day and the tent stayed completely water-tight. I think that, unless it's lashing down sideways in a gale, 2000mm is fine.
1500 HH is the defined minimum to be waterproof. Most standard leisure tents from decent manufacturers are 2,000 or 3,000 HH so the Venture will be just fine.. Most leaks come through the seams anyway...it's a rare tent that leaks through the actual fabric.
The Vango Venture is a tried and tested classic, btw, and for several years was the No1 choice here for a smaller weekender tent. You won't go wrong with it when it comes to durability and quality. And for that price it's a total bargain.
The C&C have an article on this in the tent choosing FAQ. Their experiements show that a 500head is sufficient in the UK, but rightly point out that exposure to the sun will erode this from 1st use. So the higher figures will ensure the better the resilence to water will remain over time.
Thanks for responses I will tell him that my "friends" on here were great in giving advice as per usual , we have the model later than the venture, the "tamor" which is identical I think and love it and have had no problems whatsoever with it.
yes, the vango Icarus I had was only 2000HH and coped with torrential rain in Cornwall last week. I've sold it on and got myself a Vango Venture 500 with the same HH as I'm happy with 2000HH for weekends

Just been looking at the Icarus 500 myself it looks good. I quite like the simple 3 pole system and the fact that the bedrooms are already "up", plus a fully sewn in ground sheet as our Venture porch is not fully sewn in. I darn't buy another tent though or I will be in the divorce courts.
