When the flag was first put together Wales was part of England so they had our English flag

As the union flag is made up of the colours Red, White and Blue representing Great Britain, does anyone know exactly why the country of Wales has been excluded with the colour Green or at least a Dragon displayed in the centre? It has always baffled me because Wales is part of the British Isles.
At the time that the Union Jack was created (James 1st i think) Wales was annexed to England and not considered a seperate country.

Well i have learnt something on this thread as i did not even realise there is a right or wrong way to fly the flag.
I probably did learn this fact at school when i was younger but its obviously not one of the facts they stayed in my mind.
I enjoyed seeing all the bunting, flags etc being flown over the last few weeks & hope people leave them up for the Olympics too.
The flags i have seen this past week that had any real meaning to me were the ones being highered & lowered at the repatriation ceromony of the two young soldiers at Brize norton on Thursday which i attended as one of the lads was a husband of my friends daughter. I think those ex soldiers that attend those ceremonies carry the flags are fantastic.
