Hi

Don't have a map to hand at present,this is the way we go,Bridgnorth,then head to Craven Arms,then onto Knighton,Builth Wells and onto your destination.We always stop on the 'moor' part and have something to eat there,a Little Chef is in Builth Wells,have a nice time

there is a sainsbury right next to the wrexham by pass that does breakfast, if you want to travel a little bit further then there is the gledrid truck stop on the  roundabout at the start of the oswestry bypass 

there is also a couple of roadside caravan places in the laybys along the wrexham oswestry bypass

the route from newtown to llandod using the A483 dolfor road is around 26 miles, the way suggested above via llani and llangurig and using the A470 is around 40 miles, if it was me towing a tin tent i would take the shorter route using the A483 dolfor road 

for me it would be preston M6 to M56 to the M 53 onto the A55 on the outskirts of chester, then onto the A 483 wrexham, then use the A5 from the mcdonalds roundabout at chirk, back on the 483 at the mile end service station oswestery stay on the A483 through welshpool to newtown and the at the stay on the A483 which is a left turn just before the Lidl store this will take you right into Llandod

as above places i know to eat are the sainsburys at wrexham, mc,donalds at chirk, the gledrid truck stop, there is a little chef at mile end and a costa coffee shop in the esso garage at mile end that does coffeee and bacon baps

if you want any further info on where to get off for any of the breakfast stops let me know

i would say use the motorway to chester as across country from preston to chester in the morning would not be my idea of a fun start to my holiday  

We have not long ago been there, from Shrewsbury.  We went down the A49 to Craven Arms, across to Bucknall, Knighton and then to Crossgates.  If you look on Google maps I think the distance will be about the same as it would going Oswestry, Welshpool, Newtown. 

There is a steep bit just outside Knighton, but not as bad as the road from Newtown to Crossgates, we came back that route.

Good stopping point is Prees Heath, just outside Whitchurch, there are a number of transport type cafes, and good parking for a caravan.

Have a good stay, we did.

going from oswestrey to shrewsbury then down the A 49 to craven arms and across from there would be about 15 miles further than going welshpool newtown

the road from newtown to crossgates is not that bad a road and there is nothing that would worry a caravan, it is a bit twisty but not that hilly, it is regularly used by atrtic lorries and large hgv,s

Didn't think it was that much difference, we went A49 route to avoid the huge traffic jam that there usually is in Newtown on the Friday evening of a Bank Holiday.

from around meole brace using the A 49 it is around 8 miles further than going welshpool newtown, but the bit from mile end oswestery down the A5  to meole brace also adds a few miles 

you are right about newtown on a holiday weekend and none was worse than the jubilee weekend two weeks ago, i was working in newtown and at lunchtime i drove from newtown to welshpool and there was three miles of queing traffic waiting to get through newtown and it was said on this board that it added an hour to your journey time just to get through the town
