Hello, I'd like to ask for your opinion.

I'm looking to buy a caravan again,(said I wouldn't)

I will not place a bid on E-Bay without viewing first and because of this and work commitments I seem to be missing out. The ones I have viewed have all been quite poor, even though they were advertised as really nice and some even said that on the phone!

Anyway back to the point, if I bid and win, then the van is not as described ie dry and its damp, am I obliged to pay up?

Thanks.

If it's not as described yes you can walk away. I've done it a few times when I've been to buy cars and they've basically tried it on to get rid of a wreck hoping that the person coming knows nothing.

No would be the answer because the seller would then be writing a false item description. If that was me i would check out newagents windows and for sale sections in my local paper at least then you do not have the worry of Ebay, if you have to use Ebay inspect it before you bid or buy if the seller says no to this that should tell you something, just do not get conned with an item description because with something like this i would view it before i baught it and the same goes for a car to.

Quite often people just don't know Exide rather than it being false. OP might get there to find damp the seller doesn't know about. I've viewed cars to find knackered bearings or error messages thrown out by the ECU that the owner had no idea about.

Yes I know what you mean, some of the vans I have seen the owner genuinely didn't know he had a problem.

But one was funny (well it would've been it it wasn't a 60 mile trip for nothing)

We stepped in this van, it was lifting, bloke went straight to the electric cupboard, everything works he says, have you had a van before? Yes we've had two, we say.

Erm ok, I'll leave it with you then and he shuffles off.

It looked for all the world like a building workers doss van!

I think you can walk away, after all it's not as described, I'm selling a caravan on eBay ATM, I've been as homest as possible and described it to the best of my ability,I've not stated its dry or damp free, i would never say dry on any caravan listing, even though as far as I'm aware it is, passed its service last year with flying colours. I also always say in the listing please come and view it first, then bid/buy then that saves any inconvenience on both sides, the prospective buyer doesn't feel obliged to bid, and I don't have a buyer clicking on the BIN and then saying not as described ect when they come to collect.
I've walked away when I have looked at cars and caravans in the past, even if I've won, when the item is clearly not as described.

I have found in my 73 years that it pays to advertise, you have a chance to weed the wheat from the chaff, the chancers from the genuine. ask how long they have owned it, the reason for sale, there are a milion and one reasons for selling an item,  only a small percentage are honest when it comes to cars and caravans, Good Hunting.

Maybe worth a try looking at your local Gumtree,I was looking the other day and surprised at the number of caravans being sold locally.

I would also recommend Gumtree and Preloved. Have bought some decent items from them but still give them a good going over. They are another option for local adverts.

We bought our caravan off Preloved.

Also try Autotrader.

Thanks all, yes I'm checking everywhere, Preloved / Gumtree / E-Bay / Autotrader.

My rough (very rough) rule of thumb seems to be, the good ones go quickly........

You are right and I also agree with other posters, where sellers descriptions are far from the truth..many a wasted journey as has been said..

I think I may have the makings of a very funny novel the way things are going!

Conversations like this,"can I come and view your van?"

"err but its raining"

"best time to see it, I can look for leaks, lol"

Hundreds more where they came from, especially like the ones where people buy it now without seeing it, then turn up and refuse to pay..........

Meanwhile I'm still thinking.

we have bought both our caravans from eBay without viewing first. Of course, with no intention of paynig if the 'van didn't meet expectations.

On both occassions we've been delighted with our caravan and with the excellent communication and service we've had from the private sellers.

Ask loads of questions or even better - ask for a number and give them a ring, which I would always do with such a large item, particularly if we've a good way to travel. I well on eBay too and as a good, honest seller would never have a problem with this.

So many horror stories but the majority of sellers are decent folk!

Some sellers speak, guess the meaning, lol.

1, Ideal for first time caravanners = it's a tip, but you don't know any different.

2, No damp we're aware of = It's wetter than a fish tank.

3. In need of TLC = You'll need a complete rebuild.

Do I sound bitter?
