I would get a list of all the other "The world is ending on ......" prophesies that haven't happened.
There must be thousands of them.
Her's a list from Wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events

Its pages long.
If they've all been wrong .........

They still exist, it was their civilisation that died out as such. The news had some descendants of the Mayans being interviewed about the end of the world not long back. They said it was meaningless too.

Its a shame when people's preoccupations about religion (for and against) are more important to them than helping a poster.

I think we might all be missing the point here, folks. Murano's nephew, at the age of 12, has just had a realisation about his, and his pets, mortality. He's started to deal with abstract rather than concrete logic, so will be confused and frightened. Although denial of the prophecy, whether on secular or religious grounds, what he needs help with is accepting that one day - Dec 12th or not - it's going to happen.

A bit of homespun wisdom my father passed on to me was advice he heard from someone with the worst of all hangovers: "I feel like I'm going to die" "You will, but only if you live long enough". That and the ending of "The Life of Brian". Ah, comedy! A great consolation in time of sorrow.

I think that something like this has to be related to the individual, and their views.
My own children have lost close relatives, so understand about things like death - whereas other children haven't known anybody who has died, the whole concept is "strange" to them.

Like it or not, if a person is religious then this will affect their views on death - and on things like the end of the world. On a personal note it is very important to us.

What is important is that the child is reassured that everything is going to be alright.
Perhaps it might be useful if the family got together and discussed what is said to the boy so that everybody is saying the same thing - and not one person saying doom and gloom whilst everyone else is trying to be cheerful.

I know this might sound stupid or idiotic to some, but my sister is having a terrible time with her DS who is 12 and has heard about the Mayan thing world ending 21st December this year, and is absolutely petrified, she has tried to comfort him, waylaid his fears, but nothing will convince him, that it's not going to happen, she's considering taking him to see someone about it. Any advise with a terrified child .

All the MAYAN calender is saying is that on 21st December it will be the end of their century and a new century will start. Exactly the same when we went from 1999 to 2000. I can't remember any planes falling out of the sky!

You could read it as the end of the world as we know it . That could mean an end to idiots in control ie Bankers Polaticians Dictators and the Murdocs getting there dues collaps of the euro followed by a kick back against the US doller leading to a less greed fueled world . hay we can live in hope lol

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

The Mayan calendar runs out in December, it was not that the end of the world would end.

Anyway, those that have imaginary friends , up in the sky, are obviously protected

. You could always become a Scientologist so you have another world to go to.

Our calendar ends on 31 December every year .... we just start a new one. That's all that the Mayan calendar ending means - it's time for a new one (or was sometime last year - the comments about the Gregorian calendar are correct, so 21/12/12 to us isn't the same day as 21/12/12 to the Mayans.
