I need to replace my director's chair, DS' friend having broken it (and finding one with a table, depression for bottle/glass and one with pockets for phone, specs, etc. isn't easy).  Found two possibles and compared prices and delivery charges.

Prices were much of a muchness but how come carrier delivery can vary between free,  £5.40 and £19.95 for the same item? Some of these carriers must be coining it in!  OK, realise if a big firm does a lot of business with a carrier then they may get preferential rates over a smaller firm with less usage, but surely that's not the whole story?

As an aside, last year I caught one firm charging delivery charges and sending much cheaper by Royal Mail - it was only a small item but needed it and this firm was the only one I could get it from.  Needless to say, they have been forced to change their tactics and I had all costs refunded.

I'm afraid life is not fair ficklejade, nor is the postage/delivery rate to more remote areas of the country. If we had to send to the islands our carrier would charge, a) the normal inland rate, b) a "highlands" surcharge and c) an islands surcharge. This would add up to the £25.00 mark, with a delivery estimate of 5-7 days. Even the big national carriers would sub the delivery out to delivery firms in the recipients locale, and they would add the costs on and pass them on to us. Gone are the days of a UK standard postage rate.

- and there would be a fuel surcharge on top.

I recently purchased an item on Ebay from a " reputable " dealer with 100% feedback.
The postage was £9 for anywhere mainland UK. There were obvious exclusions but my postcode was not listed and I have never been charged extra p+p and do quite a of buying on line.
My order was accepted and the seller text me telling me which courier was delivering and when I would receive it.

On the morning of delivery I received an email not even a phonecall...from the seller stating I would have to pay a further £7 p+p or he would cancel my order.
I got a refund but Ebay did nothing and the same ad is still there today with no change to postcode info.

VangoMan02 - report the dealer to trading standards, advertising standards etc.. don't let them get away with it.   It really P's me off when ads clearly state delivery £X to UK mainland, and then they want to charge you extra.

Even when they make it clear what the charges are, I fail to see how some of them are justified. One company wanted to charge me £130 to deliver a greenhouse from England to Aberdeenshire. However when I bought a polytunnel from a firm in the Midlands, it only cost £5 delivery.
