Hiya all x

I need to spend less than £250 on the greatest pocket camera ever, for taking photos at rock concerts, indoors with hectic lighting. Good zoom essential! Any ideas please? Thanks, Elz x

WE used one of these for a greenday concert and the video was a bit better than my above post but the audio was a bit poor (and this was a outdoor event) compared to the above one being indoor.
Also be careful and view the guidelines over the use of cameras in the event, some venues DO NOT ALLOW any camera at all and will search you on entering, some events are just black listed for no flash photography and the staff are awesome at catching you (M.E.N arena)

Yes, the last time I attended such an event there was a warning about not taking cameras or tape recorders in.     (Well it was a long time ago!     )

Also you will probably find that because of the very bright stage lighting you will not get good pictures of any kind.

I can remember going to a Cliff Richard concert many years ago, and had my camera with me, as the charity organisation I belonged to had arranged for a young girl with a degenerative condition to meet Cliff, and I needed to take some photos - security had to be informed as to why I was taking a large camera into the arena.

Wouldn't it depend on where you're sitting/standing ?

The greatest camera on earth may struggle if your at the back of the crowd in Hyde Park or other large venue.

In the front row it would be easy.

Also size of carrying etc. is definitely worth considering.

I would like to reinforce what has been said above some venues are VERY strict regarding cameras and videos may not only confiscate the camera. But eject the user from the arena/concert hall. (There may be an official recording being made)

I go to concerts fairly frequently and can't remeber ever being asked if I had a camera in recent years - most people have a camera on their phone anyway. I can remember years ago though when you used to get searched before being let into the venue...particularly at Sheffield Arena!! No-one seems to bother these days. Just had a look through my recent tickets and there's nothing on them about taking pix at all.

We went to see Dancing on Ice at Sheffield Arena earlier this year, on the way in we were told you are okay to use camera, so I was delighted, having taken my DSLR. However during the second half (I'd already taken a substancial amount of photos) a steward approached and said I couldn't use my camera because it had a large lens! Having said that I'd been there 2 weeks previously to see Steps and had used same camera and lens all the way through.

It might be worth getting what is considered a bridge camera, has more semi manual settings available, meaning you'd be able to shoot in lower light without a flash and may also counter the bright lights on the stage. I use a Minolta Dimage Z2 when not using my Canon DSLR.
