Forget CB, and move to ham radio instead. More civil, and better coverage.
The old CB frequencies were, in effect, de-regulated a few years ago, and given over to church groups. So if you hear a sermon on the old frequencies, don't be alarmed. People still have CB's and still use them, but they are a dying breed I'm afraid.
In ham radio, there are 3 licences to get, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. The range from a small handheld via a repeater, can be up to 30 times that of a CB.
I am an Advanced licence holder, (G8FSO) which gives me many priviliges, and I am also Chairman of Wakefield and District Radio Society (www.wdrs.org.uk) and we welcome people to see what we have, and can also train for all 3 licences.
Not strictly true, CB has never been deregulated in the UK. The restrictions remain, however it's many years since I heard of Ofcom taking any interest in what is happening on the 11 metre band. In fact there is a further block of 40 channels alllocated which are the FCC mid band block, the 4 watt FM only restriction applies. The church broadcasts which can frequently be heard stem from the Republic of Ireland, not the UK. If anyone is of the opinion that CB is defunct have a look at.www.charlietango.co.uk

A glowing report if ever I heard one.
If anyone is within range of Wakefield this weekend, we are having an open weekend for anyone that wants to come and see what it's about. It commences from around 10am Saturday, and the guys will be there for most of the weekend.
It is theoretically a members weekend, but if anyone has an interest, then our location can be found on our website:

Oh how I miss my CB radio. Still have my metal whip though!
I used to love chatting to the truckers on the A1 and calling out the square wheeled smokies!
Might have to think about getting another rig and letting the "Black Widow" loose on the airwaves again.

Just to show you what ham radio is about.
Got the day off work and currently sat in the 'shack' and just had a conversation on 15m (21mhz) with a guy on the south coast near Shoreham who is doing a field activation. Some 200+ miles.
