Electric cool box has given up the ghost, ice packs not frozen and no room in the freezer for them!

Ours gave up the last night of our holiday a few weeks back, just had to buy a new one. You might find the campsite has a block exchange when you get there. Save you the bother of freezing them.

Lots of shops open late at the moment - can you grab a coolbox and some ice to prechill coolbox?

Our Coleman Xtreme could cope with a 5 day holiday if you're near a go outdoors?

the larger branches of the co-op sell a matching set of table top fridge with the tiny freezer section it and a table top freezer for 99.99 each. in the fridge's little freezer box you can get a bag of supermarket ice cubes in there and theyll help keep your fridge cold for ages while your travelling - and handy for drinks too! we travelled from north yorkshire to scotland ( 5 hours journey ) and the bag of ice cubes was still frozen when we got to scotland!

the proper table top fridges seem to work better than those chillers but you need electric hookup when you get to your destination.

They are also not recommended for outdoor use. Its dangerous to use any kind of domestic fridge in a tent as once installed they are not supposed to be moved due to the gas used to cool them.   Our whole block had to be evacuated because some idiot managed to cut the pipe on the back of a fridge, while trying to carry it from his house to put it in his shed to keep beers cool,The fire brigade said the only place domestic fridges and freezers should be used is in a kitchen. It happened just inside his front door and we were all out of our houses for 4 hours.

re canvascomfort - oh gawd that sounds like a nightmare for those involved ... sorry to hear that.

my little fridge that i use for camping has the motor and the pipes all well protected in that they are well within the walls of the machine - nothing sticking out the back that could catch or get caught and im always careful moving it around. and im also aware that i need to be careful as the pipes contain gas.

id say theres more of a risk from the large 7kg calor gas bottle and pipe to my camping gazcooker and the cooker itself being damaged as i move them than there is with the fridge as the pipe isnt protected by anything.

as with most things - awareness plays a large part in safety. but i know accidents can happen - my mums fridge freezer developed a leak and all the gas came out - it hadnt been moved in about 15 years - it just got old!

What you say is completely right dbice, Although its more the fact that its built for indoor use than the risk of fracture to the pipes (which are delicate). The gas in a fridge is less protected than a calor gas bottle too. These are designed to be moved around.

Im not for a minute knocking you for using one. If it works for you then who am I to criticize, you are fully aware of the risks and that is probably the most important thing in using anything that isn't strictly made for camping.   My only other concern about using a domestic fridge is the power it would use from the hookup posts. Would there not be a risk of overloading the circuit? (genuine question I honestly don't know what kind of wattage these things put out).
