The word and definition of alcoholism are irrelevant. The words that are more significant to ponder when talking about alcohol is 'problem' 'excessive drinking' or 'habit'.
If you drink more than a certain amount it can cause health problems which may be obvious or may be hidden until later in life.
If you drink even small amounts regularly to relax then it could be hard to break that habit.
If you drink to get drunk or binge drinking then it could indicate that you have a problem and drinking can make emotions worse.
If you drink regularly because it is part of your lifestyle, you could have a problem later due to excessive drinking.
All the above could lead to addiction or health problems but then again they may NOT. Alcohol is a complex drug and it affects people differently. It can be addictive, it can be a depressive, it can alter mood. However most of us enjoy a drink occasionally and we really must not get things out of kilter.
A bit like the sea, it can be dangerous and we need to respect its power.
BUT the original poster has a gut feeling that her friend has a problem and so she quite rightly asks how she can help. She has had some helpful answers and let's hope it can be sorted.
