Hi Ali, electrical issues are the main problem, with engine problems following and the interiors are not as hard wearing as on the old time nissans. General build quality seems to have suffered as well.

Oh dear, as you say Renault issues transferred across. Our 2001 Almera is still fabulous and the X Trails are 2002 so largely free of Renault influence.

Most French will say stick with Citroen/Peugeot & avoid Renaults but having said that, new Renaults now offer a 4yr warranty. I've no complaints with my Citroen Berlingo, no probs in nearly 4yrs. Berlingo(or the Peugeot version, same car) might be a good choice for the op. Plenty of room for a dog crate & 4.38mtres length.

Ali, your almera will be fine and run forever if well maintained, x-trail keep a eye on electrics. Just a point to mention my mother in law(who is a serious french car lover) has just had to reject her peugeot 3008 due to the engine just loosing power suddenly numerous times! It has been in and out of the dealers for months with no fault found even though it happened to their service manager!!! another lady i know with a 3008 the rear doors keep dropping on the hinges. I think you will find not many people in the motortrade have a high opinion of french cars.

Yes it is regularly serviced and the minute anything rattles or squeaks it goes to the garage. Only 74,000 on the clock, it was a limited edition Elegance with leather seats etc and it is my little pet car lol.

Good news is I think my X Trail may have sold via my friendly garage owning friend. He rang somebody he knew wants a 4 X 4 having seen mine out front for sale :-).

So hopefully my auto will be chugging about soon and then I can figure out whether it was a good buy or not!!

Peugeot/Citroen diesels are now often designed and if not built in Dagenham, so don't be too quick to blame the French for engine troubles..

We have a 308 and the seats do come out, that is why we bought it so we could get all the camping stuff in. Ours is an 09 and the seats pop out dead easy.

I loved my Peugeot van but it's to big now I only have two dogs and Faye looks lost in Keisha's crate. :-/

I've looked at Barjo, Hamster baskets and have Mick Tozier's email addy.  I'd love a tail guard, divider and two doors but it's going to be more expensive than getting the crates out of the shed.  :-/  Also, there is sometimes a waiting list so I'd still have to use the crates in the meantime.

The Berlingo van at work has just been taxed - £215.  The Berlingo cars are £135 to tax...  Also, insurance is high on vans.

Fed up of looking.  :-(  This all boils down to fitting Sharla in!

My mechanic says exactly the same about later model Nissans, Ali. He told me they use Renault parts on newer ones and they're rubbish (actually, he used a ruder word than that!).

Gsdbc, if your dog crates are more or less a permanent feature, have you considered getting purpose-built cages made? There's a company called Hamster Baskets that my friend swears by, they'll make cages for any make of model of car, and are far cheaper than you might expect.

A friend of mine started using them when she realised that a cage an inch shorter than one of the standard sizes would be fine and give her a far wider choice of possible vehicles.

Another friend with GSDs and BCs just buys vans now!

My mechanic loves them. He says they will make him rich!
