I think you will find that the Bible nowhere states that men have an extra rib.
We'll have no pedants here, you knew perfectly well what I was getting at... From Genesis..
'So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh'
'And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man'
'Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man"'
....& so on, its all in the interpretation of course. No wonder the op's kid got confused. Or maybe it was the teacher who was confused.
If someone sends their child to a faith school you have to assume they believe the contents of the bible to be fact. This is something we need to remember. Just because we may feel the bible is simply stories, doesn't mean to say all will feel the same. We should respect this and not automatically assume they must be wrong. No one was alive when it was written so it all comes down to faith ...... Disrespect for others views causes all sorts of problems which is probably why it is not meant to be discussed here.
I did also mention earlier that the bible does not state all men will have one less rib.
I am guessing the teacher said the line in jest. I doubt he even thought whether he should have said it or not. But it just goes to show teachers should carefully think what they say as many children assume everything that comes from a teachers mouth must be 100% correct. It is only as we grow older we realise they too are not perfect

But is the Bible not allegorical in any case?
Well of course but as I & most others would have to google 'allegorical' to find it's meaning, I'm quite sure kids wouldn't know the difference either. The op posts do seem to suggest that he was not that happy about his daughter attending a faith school in the first place.
In would agree with the op that kids should be taught the true facts & not be put in a situation where the 'facts' as written in the bible are obliquely taught as true facts. Kids are often not quite up to 'reading between the lines' although I do remember as a kid being taught that God created the world in 7 days & thinking "nah that can't be right". I think this is where I began to stop believing in God.
I would be more in favour of the French system of secular education but in this country we have faith schools & if a parent chooses to send their kid to one they must expect the edges between the the truth & the bible's 'truth' to be blurred sometimes.
That's the problem - thought is required. A difficult concept. If you read Genesis, there are two versions of creation. There you go!

Last go ......
But it doesn't say how many ribs Eve was given at all. More than Adam or less than him? Doesn't say.
Agree, the teacher needs to think before speaking - a pretty good rule in general.
Ta-ra!
I would check first, it could have been something like this is why people once believed that men had one less rib - rather than "this is why men have one less rib" as a fact.
It could be that it was rather badly put, rather than the one less rib being taught as fact - regardless of the lesson.
Give the teacher time to clear up the confusion before taking it further.
Probably one of the most bizarre discussions I've read on here!!!!!
I don't know how many ribs me or my OH have and to date it hasn't kept me up at night!!!.
My kids went to a catholic primary and secondary school and quickly learned that science often contradicts religion. They are bright enough to draw their own conclusions as they get older x
My kids went to religious school, and whilst I don't agree with everything that's taught, especially in the science/RE areas, it was clear which was which. On the other hand they also learnt useful moral and life lessons from it, and to care and share - traits often lacking in non-religious schools.

neither contradicts the other they complement each other the early scientists were religious universities were church based look at oxbridge colleges for example however it is the interpretation put on the scientific findings that seem to become the issue and an inability to think out of the box too rigid thinking can lead to too rigid a point of view flexibility of mind and body are important, wouldn't you say?

Yes but surely, a "fact" is a "fact", op is quite correct that if this came up in an exam she would have answered incorrectly. Thus resulting in a lower score.
Not having a dig, merely stating an opinion.

If by fact you mean - something that never alters then facts are not facts they are just transitory peices of information. The atom was once seen as the smallest particle , then we had neutrons, electrons, etc now we have neutrinos and Higgs Bosun particles. So which 'fact' are we trying to discuss? Life is full of euphamisms, allegories, literal translations, etc.
