About 20 years ago I moved into a rented house and kept getting letters for the previous tenants. Gradually I became aware of the red writing on some of the official letters which worried me rather: I had worked with bailiffs and knew how cynical they could be if someone argued they weren't the debtor! Then a letter came which accidentally fell open in my hands - it was a response to an application by the previous tenant for credit. I sent it back to the lender apologising for opening the letter in error and saying (innocently of course) that the lender must have mistakenly sent their letter to the applicant's previous address not their current address. Shortly afterwards another letter accidentally opened in my hands that made me go straight to the phone and ask the landlord (a) if he had sold the property to the previous tenants and (b) did he know they were applying for a mortgage on it? Needless to say he hadn't and he didn't. Never knew the end of that story, but I'm glad I became aware of the contents of the letters before the bailiffs arrived on the doorstep.
