After months of not being able to use the caravan due to knee problems I eventually got the op for a new knee in July. Only to be told after many complications and pain it has to come out due to a cronic infection inside the joint. This involves removal of the new knee joint and then left without a joint for a minimum of 6 weeks whilst they try to get rid of the bugs and then if they do, inserting another metal knee joint. Otherwise amputation of my leg. On oral morphine now and it still hurts like hell.

Think I'll sell the van and get a invalid scooter. Deppresed or what....

Hang in there however hard it must be.Im not going to try and say i understand what you are going through because i dont but wait a while before making any big decisions as your mind can change how it thinks quite quickly in many directions.

I know that it is rough at the moment - but hang on in there, it will get better.
Last year my son Pip had major surgery on his ankle to straighten in.   External Fixator on his leg for 16 weeks, confined to a wheelchair for much of the time, as he was too unsteady on crutches to do much.    Danger that the operation may not work, chance of further ops, amputation if things went wrong.   Weekly hospital visits.
At 16 weeks the xray showed that everything was fine and that the fixator could be removed, which really surprised the consultant as he had anticipated that it would be a much longer procedure, as Pip has other health issues, including the bones in his leg being very thin.

OK things like contact sport are out for him, but that doesn't bother him as he has never been into things like football - but he is now enjoying things like badminton and non contact stuff in PE.

So hang on in there - keeping fingers cross that things work out for you and you can once again enjoy your van.
Think of things like putting on a seasonal pitch somewhere within easy reach of home, so that you could still use it - without the hassle of towing etc.

Dont despair, next sping it will be a distant memory. I had my new knee in May, luckily it went well. Pain free and walking within a couple of weeks, even managed to chase the grandson down the beach at Brid. last month. I had a major op. on my foot two years ago, pins fitted and toes amputated, because of arthritis in my hands I could not use crutches. Six weeks stuck upstairs drove me nuts. The van will store till spring, then you will wonder what you were stressing about. Good luck and a speedy recovery.

After they take out the infected knee joint, they should put in an articulating spacer with antibiotic cement. That and the antibiotics should clear the infection in 6 weeks, all being well. There are some surgeons who do a "single stage revision" for infected replacement joints (i.e. one operation rather than two and a shorter hospital stay). It might be worth asking your consultant for more information.

keep smiling. A friend of mine, her son an ice hockey player, was in a motorbike accident, mashed his leg up, they pinned it, grafted it and all was looking good, had gone back to 6th form. Two weeks into school, he developed some pain. Back in to check up.. infection had set in. The whole op had to be reversed, all the graft had to be cleared out and he ended up in a wheelchair for a few weeks. Over winter it was terrible for him not being on the ice. His next op was having bags of 'something' implanted, these in time should develop into bone, it was the last chance saloon. It worked for him and a was back on the ice this year. Not quite the same as you Boris54, but keep going. No matter what life throws at us, find the best option.

As a last resort, you only have to cast your mind back to a fortnight ago to see what can be done with dodgy or missing body parts.
Good luck mate, im sure it wont come to it.

Agree with all the other comments ... Bear with it, it will get better. Father in law has 2 brand new knees and is still touring in the motorhome and loving it (albeit with a stick) so there is some hope. Good luck.
