The good wife and I are both considering taking new mobiles with virgin mobile as the packages on offer seem rather good. The phones we are considering are the samsung galaxy range, but Ive noticed in the virgin catalogue that they run on android 2.3, where the latest android operating system is now 4.0. So, can we update the O.S. from 2.3 to 4.0 in the same way you can update the I.O.S on Iphones as a new system is brought out?

My Galaxy S+ (predecessor of the SII) runs 2.3 as does Mrs G's Ace and they're fine. I've just manually tried an update and nothing is available. I think the newer phones get the newer systems and updates to earlier models are in the gift of the phone maker and network.

Samsung's site for the SIII shows it is shipped with Android 4.0(ICS).

As mine does everything I need, I'm going to hold on to it till 4G fully rolls out then update to the current Galaxy. I won't entertain any Apple product but that's just me.

If the Virgin deal is good and isn't excessively long term I'd go for it whatever OS the devices have. OS updates aren't always better. Apple CEO apologises for maps cock-up

BTW, our phones use Google Maps

Good luck.

I have a galaxy ace on virgin. 2 yr deal £10.99 a month.I think it's great. I get 100 mins 500 data and 500 texts. Plenty sufficient for me, Im using it now!
I have had mine for 6 months now so I don't know how that compares to current deals. The screen is not as sharp as my husbands i phone and as far as Im aware no flash on 2.3.
Not important to me though and I used to spend £10 pay as you go on my old phone with no internet!

Agreed, Mrs G's Ace screen isn't as good as my S+. Different models need auditioning if browsing/pics/video is important. Mine takes HD video and the quality is better than any video camera I've had, ever.

I have Flash Player on mine but probably got it from the Android Store to run BBC or something.

Think it depends on the model!

My wife's Galaxy Note was 2.3 when she got it but was soon updated to 4.0. She is on o2 but it probably doesn't make much difference which network it is.

The Galaxy S3 is so new I'd be surprised if it wasn't ICS.

With older models, I guess a lot depends on whether the processor/memory can cope the the updated OS or not. I have an old HTC Desire S and am still awaiting the promised upgrade, but I know HTC wont upgrade some models because the hardware isn't up to it so I guess older Samsung models would be the same.

Samsung here too....I have a Wave 723 due to upgrade soon, daughter has a Samsung Note and another daughter a Samsung S2. None of us would swap for another make of phone and when I get my upgrade it will definitely be another Samsung.

Hi,

Samsung Phones are very good, but more to the point, I would never sign up for a contract as everytime I have checked out the costs, it has always been cheaper to buy the phone and then purchase a SIM, that way you are not tied into a contract and if the service dosen't suit your needs you can just change to another mobile company.

Make sure you buy a SIM less phone or and Unlocked phone of your choice, also if you are going for one of the range of smart phones like the Galaxy S, S11, S111, Note etc, e.g. the top range, then make sure you get an internet/data allowance, as some of them can be a bugger to turn off some of the app's and if you haven't got a data allowance you can find you are spending money when you don't need to.

One SIM you may want to look at is GiffGaff there monthly deal is very hard to beat, Here

The updates for the Android operating system are a combined effort:-

Firstly by the Android system manufacturers (Google)

Then by the mobile phone makers like Samsung, HTC, etc.
based upon the model e.g. Galaxy Ace, S, S11, S3 Nexus, Note etc.

Then by the mobile operating company e.g. Virgin, 3 , Vodafone etc.

As each of them have an interest and may need to tweek the New Release of the Operating System to suit there particular phone or mobile signal,

So to know whether the phone model you want to purchase will have the latest Android system you really need to do a bit of Googleing and speak to your chosen mobile operating company, contract of PAYG.

What you can be sure of just like Microsoft change the Windows Operating system, Android will continue to do the same, so no matter what system you get there will be a new one coming out shortly and not to far down the road your chosen phone won't get it, not that that will matter much as I have used most of the updates and from my prospective I really haven't noticed much difference

Hope that helps.

I cant afford to buy a sim free phone so to get the latest phone it needs to be a contract. Ive got a giffgaff sim and the bundles are excellent value, but to get the sim to work in my iphone 4 is nightmare, in fact, ive given up and stuck it into my wifes old nokia e5. Virgins contract deals are brilliant value. A samsung s2 on the premier bundle gets you 2500 mins, unlimited text and unlimited data, plus free virgin to virgin (mobile or landline) and free insurance if you have tv/phone off them. Sales rep is trying to save me money by offering me a lower spec phone, but when youve had an Iphone, you want similar spec, so I think Ile order off a different rep.

Hi,

That's a good point if you can't afford to buy the phone up front then I suppose a contract is a way of getting it, albeit i would take an independent loan out as you still have to make the repayments either through the contract or for the loan, and I think the loan would be a better deal.

I find that the Samsung range are far better than the 2 previous iPhones I have had, I would never go back to a iPhone they were terrible.

As for GiffGaff I have used one of there SIM's in various different phones without any problems.

Again what ever mobile service you go with double check that the signal strength and quality are what you need in the areas that you want to use the phone.

As all to often I hear of situations where people have gone for good deals then find the signal is very poor against the original company they were with, and if you have signed up for a contract you are stuck, with it for a long while, you can't go back, that's why I always go PAYG and if necessary buy a bundle monthly ?

hope that helps

Cheers Dane. Just connected phone and opened Kies and sure enough it did run a firmware update so I got excited. Sadly though, it ended up still on 2.3.5 Gingerbread so I'm guessing my Galaxy S+ just won't get the latest OS.

Ah well, still a great tip re Kies managing phone updates.

Roll on 4G on all networks and I'll upgrade then to GS III, or IV if it's out.
