As DaneR says; type of battery - I believe it is/was NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries that required full discharge/full recharge. otherwise they contracted what was described as "memory loss", and would gradually recharge to lower and lower capacities. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride-?) don't suffer from this and can be partly used and recharged without (major?) effect, while Lithium Ion - I don't know about these, but I'm sure someone will!
