Hi, not sure if anyone knows anything about dishwashers?

Ours has just suddenly started, basically, not cleaning very well. Everything has tiny bits that you can't really see but feel, almost like rough sandpaper. Some larger bits aren't being removed at all.

The dishwasher is over 8 years old - I've cleaned out the filters I can see and removed the main spinning arm and cleaned that out as well - no obvious build up in any of this.

The water is getting heated up OK and it seems to be draining OK.

I can't imagine it's going to be worthwhile to get someone out to have a look at it, considering the age - so any ideas gratefully accepted.

Make sure you have plenty salt in the reservoir.  There is not enough in the 'all in one' tablets.

The machine probably needs a thorough was with a dishwasher cleaner that removes grease and limescale etc. and 'Finish' which is a trusted brand sells this specific cleaner although some supermarkets do as well at a lower price although they are not as good and you often need two. The voice of an expert told us that if a dishwasher is only used a couple of times a week the problem is worse and needs cleaning more often due to the fact that remaining water in the base is left stagnant which then creates a build up limescale etc. It worked for us but now we use the dishwasher daily so it needs less cleaning.

Agree with above, get a bottle of cleaner, you only have to bung it in the cutlery rack and turn it on empty.

Thank you all - I'll give the cleaner a go

(I've got salt in it - in fact the problem started shortly after I put the last lot of salt in).

I clean mine through about every 6 weeks as we are in a really hard water area. Finish bottles are good as are the fairy tablets. Sainsbury's cleaner is okay but not very strong. Don't use Asda's own though, leaves a smell like sick

Had the same problem with ours.

Gave it a really good clean (filters, spray arms, seals etc.) then used Aldi dishwasher cleaner £1.99 twin pack (price at the time!) as per instructions.

Use soda crystals on self clean setting every couple of months now.

nelmo:   Did you use a dishwasher cleaner as advised and if so did it cure the problem?

I Bought a Morrisons own brand dishwasher cleaner today for £1.20 which in the past have used the Finish cleaner but it has left a wonderful aroma in the kitchen.

Give it a blast with this

Dishwasher cleaner

It is really good. We live in an extemely hard water area and the machine is over 12 years old. Occasional doses with HG and it is still as good as new.

Tried it a couple of times but got the same result. Maybe they have changed it since I tried it.

Have you checked whether the rinse aid dispenser is working? The rinse  aid  allows the water to drain from the surface and if its not working this could be the problem.

Hi I repair them things to check,

are the spray arms going around? put them in the twelve o`clock position and start the machine, after its been running open the door and see if they have moved.

are you using a multi-function tablet? if so DONT add rinse aid, the tablet contains rinse aid, if you add rinse aid as well it will create foam, depending on the type of dishwasher you have it can cause loads of problems, some manufacturers have a setting which allows you to turn off the rinse aid dispenser.

all ways use a cleaner as previously mentioned,

remove as much debris off plates before putting them into the dishwasher. Its not a waste disposal unit

if you load dishes into it in the morning after breakfast and again in the evening before putting it on are you doing a rinse only? you should, food deposits from breakfast pots can dry on and become difficult to remove the worst offenders are egg, bran type cereals and potatoe

Can I ask a question? Our dishwasher runs for a few minutes and then turns itself off, without having done any thing. I can hear water going in but it must just drain away as it isn't there when I open the door. OH wants to buy another one, but I would rather see if this can be repaired. I have tried al; the programs but nothing makes any difference. I have also cleaned everything . Should I just bite the bullet and buy another one or get someone in the fix it?

Thanks.
