I really want to find a good cardigan that doesn't bobble and doesn't cost the earth. I have to look smart for work but I don't have a great deal of money. I prefer cardigans for layering reaons. My mum buys from Edinburgh wool and they always end up bobbling. I bought a lovely acrylic turquoise cardigan from BHS for £19 which I thought was a good deal but I've worn it twice and it is all ready starting to bobble on the arms.
Any suggestions of a better material or brand would be greatly recieved, thanks!
Cheap jumpers will bobble (pill). As I understand it the yarn will have shorter fibres and these break away. It will happen on all new jumpers but should stop after a while. With cheap yarn there is too much short fibre so itwill keep happening.
You can reduce it by washing inside out and putting the garment in a Washing bag, making sure you only put it on a woollens or 'hand wash' program.

I wash my jumpers by hand. It keeps them softer and they feel nicer when they've been washed with a gentle hand action. I find knitwear goes stiff and flat if I put it in the machine. It's only a few items a week, and I do them all together and use a controllable-speed spin-dryer to lightly spin off the excess water.
I've always done loads of hand washing, as we all have nice T-shirts with logos which peel eventually if you wash them in a machine. Also the kids' replica football shirts keep smarter and don't fade if you handwash.
I've still had knitwear which bobbles even when handwashed, but I use a de-linting shaver on those.

Yes mine too, that's why I posted originally - am I expecting too much from a bhs cardigan? Would I be better off in the long run buying a wool product rather than acrylic although no doubt I would shrink it.
Just wondered what other people have found wears well?
I will try washing by hand though as I'm sure that is gentler.
I have a jumper and a cardigan that have never bobbled and I have had them for years. They are synthetic and I would have brought them from Debenhams and are quite good quality. They are 75%acrylic and 24% nylon, have just checked. Both are fine knit but quite heavy and hang nicely with no ironing.
