Wondering if anyone has dealt with and purchased an adjustable bed from any of the following companies and if so were you satisfied with the product and service.

Electric Bed Company
Cyberbeds
Furmanac ( also make Mibeds)

We are looking to get one for my m.i.l. and can't afford thousands as some companies want, the ones above are cheaper but not sure if that means they are rubbish...

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

You could try your local social services for their advice, they may arange a OT assesment for you mil to see what would be the most suitable, some may have weight restrictions or not be height adjustable, whilst others may only have single motor mecanisms for back rest only, or preset positions. They may also offer some financial assistance to get a better more siutable bed that may otherwise be out of your price range.

There are also considerations to be made regarding any pressure care your mil may need either now or in the future, and some of the cheaper beds may not offer this facility in their mattresses.

Finally, dont be tempted to buy off line without first trying the bed out for comfort. I made that mistake with a reclining bedchair a few months ago, having been highly satisfied with other products from the same company, I ordered my new chair online to save some money, only to find it was too big to fit my size, and i sat awkwardly in it, resulting in a sacral pressure sore which was very painful. I ended up spending the money i had saved in the deal in buying a memory foam topper for it, and im now sa ing up again to buy another chair that fits me better and is more comfortable.

Romany girl...its an absolute minefield looking for these beds.
One very large company I looked at is up for sale which I only found out by doing some online research. We were going to visit the store today as they are still trading.
They have about 8 stores in Scotland.

I would be reluctant to order anything from a company that is up for sale with the risk of losing our money if they go bust, as seems to be par for the course nowadays.

The other main player also with several stores in Scotland has terrible reviews.

Your excellent advise has made me rethink and will get in touch with social services who as you say have experience in this matter..Many Thanks..

Hi,
I looked at many of these companies when I was looking out for a bed for my terminally sick Dad.
I then started looking on E bay and could never work out why the companies charged so much....

Didn't buy as bless him , we gave him home hospice care - a bed was provided for him by the local health authority/ hospice whilst he needed it.

Social services are an excellent source of help too.

Two years ago needing a new bed...and having trouble with my circulation while sleeping I bought a secondhand Electric Adjustable bed...Head/foot/knee adjustment facilities as well as 2-3 pulse options wave/pulse etc..

Made by a company called Craftmatic (sorry don't know where they trade from)I never use the pulse option...and only rarely adjust the height on any thing but the head as I seem to have found a height that suits my circulation(though I do still suffer some nights when I wake up with dead arms and legs)

No technical data or info to impart...Just posted to say I'm happy with my purchase...and could give a recommendation for this product if not the company itself as I bought second hand for about £200...

Hope (if you can find the company) this may help...

Jelboy.

Dozy.. I have looked on Ebay but the two main companies do not deliver to Scotland and digging deeper online their business history is a bit confusing..

jelboy..similar circulation issues for mil, you seem to have got a good buy with your bed. I think Craftmatic is an American company and make good beds but got a bad reputation by pressure selling and taking thousands of pounds from older people, according to the web,,

Hi Jellboy53

Crafmatic ceased trading about 4 yrs ago- warranties etc taken over by Adjustamatic

beds. I had purchased two single beds with all the facilities you mention .Had them 6 years now with no problems, except I needed a firmer mattress. I found the ones in Premier Lodge suited me fine so got the details off them and ordered a mattress.

Problem sorted-cost  near £1000  new for the 2 delivery setup etc included and still

going strong

Phoned Social services today for some advice about adjustable beds. To be honest a complete waste of time, unable to give any recommendstions or advice where best to buy etc.
The only thing they mentioned was the possibility of not paying vat if for a chronic illness etc. I did know that already.

We went to a store in Edinburgh who are apparently the biggest supplier of adjustable beds in Scotland.
They also had the model we were interested in on display.
When trying it out we noticed the internal extending arms were rubbing on both sides and were gouging a track in the wood again on the inside, which caused it to judder just as going up and the when down again..

We ended up at a large local furniture store which had not shown any adjustable beds on its website but a friend we met today told us he was sure they had a couple.

Glad we did as we ended up buying one for mil and a king size for ourselves..so much for watching the budget.
They are sleepeeze brand and the build quality and finish is much better than the others we looked at.

We got a good price and they have stock, deliver and assemble the beds.

I can throw out the wedge pillow I have been using for a while

have a look at the lloyds pharmacy website they do a bed for £399 my mother bought one and it was delivered and shown how it worked, she originally had a second hand one just to try but the motor packed up. so i searched the internet they do one that massages but that is 499. she also bought a chair that helps you get up by tilting or it reclines, so sometimes she goes to sleep in it.

Well our problems are just beginning as mil is 84 yrs old and in early stages of dementia.
She does not like or trust new things, we have had to search high and low for as an example, her old upright cooker stopped working and unable to be repaired so we had to get one that was almost identical which is difficult in todays world of hobs and separate oven.

We did get one and had to pay a premium for it, had to be dispatched from somewhere in England (can't remember where)
She had the old original GPO telephone in ivory whick packed in, that was easy to get on Ebay.
That is just a few examples.

We don't mind the hassle of trying to keep everything the same nor the cost but its getting harder to find some things.

So as I said we will have our problems getting her to use her new bed and dispose of the old one but she does need this adjustable bed for health reasons.

Let battle commence..

I purchased two electric recliner beds made by Furmanac. The beds were guaranteed for five years and the motors for two. However one night whilst my wife who has spinal problems lay in bed supported by the backrest of her bed the backrest collapsed. On inspection it was found that the outer casing of the motor that attaches the motor to the bed had broken off.
Although the beds had been purchased through an outlet, the beds had been delivered direct from the manufacturer Furmanac, of Kings Swinford West Midlands.

through the retailer we contacted Furmanac to tell them of this problem As the beds were just weeks over two years old, I put a case to them explaining that although the bed motors were only guaranteed for two years it was the securing housing of the motor that had failed causing the backrest to collapse and that in fact the motor itself ran and operated fine.

I also told them that in my considered opinion I would expect the securing mechanism to out last the life of the motor.
From then the problem started,
They ignored e-mails that contained attached photos of the broken unit, and in fact after many e-mails being sent it was three weeks before it was possible to sent the attachments to an employees phone.,
from that point they have been totally negative in their response I have also asked for the information as to whether this a common occurrence. To which as no surprise they haven’t answered. However now after many attempts to solve this issue with Furmanac they are holding fast on the Guarantee. So be aware, this is my experience with furmanac who’s bed are quite expensive, and who’s after sale’s, and understanding are much to be desired

853bob...sorry to hear that. You would have though it would have been covered as it is a mechanical part and not the motor itself.

Have you contacted Trading Standards for help.

Our bed and mother in laws are still working ok, thats a year this month.

I hope you can mangage to get it fixed and it does'nt cost very much.
