I've bought an LPG cooker which I want to put in my kitchen. It will be attached to the propane bottle via the wall to outside. I've asked an LPG gas safe chappie to do it but what I want to know is what bits do I need for him to do the job? I've already got the inside hose/regulator/propane bottle. Just want to be ready when he comes to do it then he will only charge me for his labour. Thanks

44 people read it and no has any idea?? Surely someone's got an LPG cooker in their kitchen and can look at the connections???

I imagine most people without gas have an electric cooker, that's why. Try google?

We used to have an lpg cooker, which was attached to a bank of bottles.
Not sure if it's still the case but we had to have an additional on\off lever as well as the bottle off. It was a lever at the inlet so we could quickly turn off the gas if need be.

Ali - lots of people, certainly around our area, where there is no mains gas use lpg cookers, rather than electric. Mainly because we also seem to have more power cuts, so are self sufficient when we have no electricity.

Just a further thought but we had lpg central heating as well, so we maybe had to have the lever because of that.
Also, we weren't able to site the bottles just the other side of the outside wall. Ours are around 25 foot from the house and piped in.

Thank you Gailk We too have no mains gas so that answers Ali's comment. Yes I'm aware of the cut off situation and I know that there will be other regulations along the way that's why I've put it in the hands of the GasSafe people. Just wanted a vague idea of bits to accumulate before he comes to do the job then he'll just charge me for labour. Thanks for your reply. Very useful.

If he's from GasSafe he should have the parts he will need with him. Unless you know exactly what parts you need and what length of pipe etc, then won't you just be wasting your money?

Perhaps you should call him and ask what is required. It will probably cost him less for the supplies than it will cost for you to buy them, so ask in advance if there will be any other costs apart from labour and what they are likely to be.

I`m all for saving a few quid, but would let him supply the parts for 3 reasons.

1. I am a plumber and when people buy there own parts there are usually the wrong ones or of extremely poor quality. Often the price that they have paid for them is more than I would have charged anyhow.

2. A plumber/gas engineer will have his own favorite brand / type of parts that he is familiar with and knows inside out and can fit quickly. You start giving him parts that he is not used to and yes he will fit them, but it may take longer.

3. Probably the most important reason. When the cooker stops working who gets the blame? If parts are faulty then you are responsible for changing them and paying the gas fitters labour for doing so.
If he supplies the parts there are no arguments.

If worried about cost, get quotes for the total job including parts.
