I was going to say the same as Tigermouse - meets are great, but can only attract people wihing a certain travelling distance.
I started camping on ,y own, with the two kids the year my husband didn't bother to book time off, and my brother was told by his lovely boss, that as he didn't have anything booked, and no kids, that he, despite having booked the time off to come with us, couldn't have it off, as they were short staffed that week. It was either go solo or loose the holiday. Have now been solo with them on several occasions.
As a Facebook addict I would join a page.
To those who are thinking of goign solo, I would say go for it. If you are unsure, go somewhere local for the weekend, just to make sure that you know how to pitch solo. Also if you really do not like it, it isn't far for you to come home.
When we first started camping, we weren't too sure if the kids would like it, so we went an hour from home, with the idea that one of us could always run th kids home if thye really hated it, and the other take down the tnet, and follow. As it was they took to it like a duck to water.
Choose somewhere family friendly if you have kids.
