Hi i was about to pay for a flight by my debit card, my mate has said of they go bust then i will lose my money, but if paying by credit card i will be insured, although it will cost me more, any ideas on this please??
Credit card will give you more protection under consumer law as the credit card company will be joint and liable. For example If the airline goes out of business you can claim your money back even if the administrator deems no compensation is payable.
If you pay by debit card you do not get the additional consumer credit protection.
Snowy is right you only have to pay £100 of the purchase price on the credit card. Also be aware that the purchase price of the item must be over £100 although all of this does not need to be paid by credit card (just first £100). In reality some on line retailers/websites do not allow you to split the purchase (eg flights). Probably more to do with the payment systems.
Please read the guide posted as some exclusions will apply....
That isn't what I said McGuire and neither is it quite right. If you are purchasing something worth over £100, even if you pay the deposit only by credit card you will be protected. So you could have an item valued at £200, pay £20 deposit by credit card and the rest cash on collection, and still be covered.

This is correct but it depends on how much extra the company charges for credit card and what airline it is and its risk of it going bust!
BA, Virgin, Easyjet etc. and any major airline is not risky.
Coconut Airways or similar is a different matter!
------------- I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
I have recently paid for two things. One a holiday, which if paid by credit card would have been more than the insurance cover, so, I paid for this by debit card and insured for all eventuallities, and the flights I paid by credit card with no 2 % cost.
It should be noted that protection for payments via debit card MIGHT still be available. There is a system called chargeback operated by the main debit card providers that give you protection BUT this is not a statutory protective (but does have the advantage that in theory it covers ALL values ..even under £100)
------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
credit card .Its a no brainer . companys are going bust left right and centre . I look at it this way if you carnt afford to loose it you should pay with a credit card and at least your covered .
If booking an Easyjet or Ryanair flight for next week, I would use my debit card as the chances of them going bancrupt vs the high credit card charges make this the best option.
If booking Asia airways for some flights in 2015, it would be credit card every time.
You decide.
------------- On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

Sorry Snowy, did not intend to misquote you in anyway. Also reading my post I did not make myself crystal clear, hence the original link to the guide.
The purchase price must be over £100 to be eligible but even if £1.00 is paid on the credit card and the remainder in cash you will be covered for the full £100. As stated there are exceptions so best to check.
