I have tried to copy some data from an old external to a new external hard drive, but it seems the old drive is goosed. You can hear a clicking/ticking if you put your ear up close, but the pc wont even register it in the drives list. Is there a cheap way of accessing the hard drive just so I can retrieve the data. I know it could be done by scientific boffins, but its really not worth spending more than about £30-50 on it.

Any thoughts?

Try a linux live cd (buy a copy of linux format magazine) put cd in drive and boot from the cd. you now have a working operating system and may see you hard drive partitions. You can then copy files/folders to dvd or cd or external drive.

A copy of linux mint 14 is on the front of the latest magazine and is very easy to use

Try putting it in your freezer for 24 hours, make sure its covered in kitchen roll or somthing like and then put in a sealed plastic bag, thatshould stop any dampness. Plug it it in and boot up as soon as you take it out. I have managed to get data from 3/4 of drives in the past.

ok try going into your pc mangement and changing the letter of the hard drive. Most if not all pc will always go to the next letter of the alphabet when installing the details of the drive, so if you have previously used the old HD it might be down as G drive for instance, then when you plug the new one in it takes the same letter.

then when the old one boots up it wont show due to the crossover


to sort this rename it the HD


start menu settings control pannel

administrative tools

computer management

storage

disk management

then in their see if it shows in properties (PLUG BOTH IN) at same time

if that fails then it could be goosed

ive known friends to throw away perfectly good drives due to this error.

how would renaming the drive help? the ticking noise is the drive giving up not the cable? all that will do is cause mass confusion in the computers directory.


never tried the freezer thing i have just bought a new one and saved what i could.

my hd clicks its 12 years old still runs just fine.

but in this day and age, people attaching phones, flash drives, externals, satnavs, and cameras the pc will name the item the next letter down you know like C: drive and so on (and then keep the Letter of the drive in its small cache) i did not mean name it josh or joanne.

thanks guys, im going to try the freezer, then renaming it. My wife aint convinced about the freezer, she thinks you lot are having me on, but im positive, and tonight, the hard drive freezes!

Do I need to take the drive out of the external case? Or just stick the whole case in the freezer then plug it straight into the usb slot after the 24 hours

You need to put plenty of kitchen roll around it to stop any damp, so if you can take it out the case first, that cuts down the water vapor in the air around the drive. I have used that trick when people come to me with a dead computer and have not backed up photos and data. About 3/4 of the time it works for about 20 to 30 minutes before it stops again, don't think it will fix the problem, so you can keep using it. Sometimes you get a dry joint and over time the heat from use will make the joint part, the freezer thing makes the joints make contact until it gets hot again. the other option is to get a drive the same as what you have now and swap the electric boards, but you might as well bin it if you are not very good at that sort of thing.
