We are off to Weymouth for the week on Saturday and hoping to get on the bikes for the majority of it. Can anyone suggest things to do or nice scenic rides we can take?

Chesil Beach and Abbotsbury Swannery are lovely. Are they motorbikes or pushbikes?

The Dorset touist website is very good - well worth a look. I hope you have a good time - it's beautiful down there

If they are pushbikes Saffy50 a nice flat scenic ride would be along our local 'Rodwell Trail', from Weymouth Town centre along an old railway track which runs parallel to the sea (around 3 miles,) finishing at Ferrybridge, Wyke Regis.

For an extended route, carry on riding across the causeway cycle route, parallel to Chesil Beach' over to the (Olympic) Sailing Acadmy on the Isle of Portland.

Watering holes along the route to look out for:-

Sandsfoot Castle cafe. (Pop in with your bikes to have a look round 'Henry the 8ths' 'Old Castle' Fabulous sea views, (free entry)

Ferrybridge Pub

Chesil Beach Centre - cafe/resturant

Other watering holes at the Sailing Centre and Portland itself.

All have outside seating, toilets and safe places to keep an eye on your bikes..

While you are there you must visit Lulworth Cove it's beautiful, might be a bit far for a bike ride though !!
I love Weymouth but haven't been for about 5 years due to the awful summers we've had.

I don't blame you marpin - I tried to camp in weymouth last June and the rain and wind killed my tent it was quite frightening. I am hoping to go back and explore around Weymouth a bit more this summer it is such a beautiful area

Where did you camp Poppy? I am from this area, and would love to hear what you thought of local campsites, despite the weather I can recommend east fleet farm chickerell.! Saffy50, how did you get on? What was your stay like? :-)

Sorry Dozie77,

Should have worded it much better, we are your neighbours from just across the Causeway.

Last year I went to Littlesea because of the bus into town. Not the sort of site I would normally choose at all. The warden was very good but as I say had to retreat to a b&b. The previous year i camped atWest Fleet Farm which was lovely but as I have no car it's a bit too far from public transport though I would go there again - the bar/restaurant and pool were a definite plus.

Poppy9560,

Not sure if you are aware, a (Coastal)  X53 First Bus runs at least every two hours into Weymouth Town Centre near West Fleet Farm.

The Bus stop is at the top of Bagwell Farm Campsite where weekend Car Boot sales are held.

As soon you enter Westfleet Farm, there use to be a concrete road on the right leading into some Camping fields, follow this roller coaster road up into Bagwell Farm Campsite, I believe the two Campsites are owned by the same owner now, though could be wrong, this route I think is a public right of way or Bridle Path.

The X53 (Coastal) route also goes down to West Bay, Bridport, Charminster, Lyme Regis,Seaton, Sidmouth and  Exeter.

Ok I understand now Coast walkers! Also think you are right about the bag well and west fleet sites ownership now.
Hope you all had a good day, if not a little wet :-)
