Have recently started keeping fish in a 46l tank. My current stock is 12 Black Neon Tetra. The tank was fully cycled before adding them on two separate occasions. These fish are doing really well and their colouring is more pronounced.

I added 7 Cherry Shrimp on Friday and they seemed to be doing fine, except i thought a couple of the Tetra seemed a bit too interested for my liking. I decided to add a couple of extra plants to give them more hiding places. Yesterday I put in some Java Moss and another type recommended by the fish store. Within a couple of hours the Cherries were behaving strangely now all but one is dead. All the Tetras are fine.

Any advice please on what may have caused this and when it might be safe to add some more Cherries. I have tested my water this morning and results are good showing no change.

Dont know about those cherry shrimp but it sounds as if the tetra has been attacking them. You have to be careful what fish you put in with others as they will fight and be eaten,When you buy anything from a shop make sure they are healthy and there is no signs of ill fish or infections in the tank.

you should quarantine fish in some water from your tank b4 putting then together ie in the same water different tank same with plants .also be wary of advice from pet/fish shops best thing is read as much as poss and study which fish are compatible . most pet/fish shops have young staff who may not know that what they are telling you is the best advice for you or your fish tho not all are like this just saying be very carful on given advice .think of your tank as a life of its own and anything you may put into it may endanger its life and you wont go far wrong ----its not what we know its what we can learn that count

Black neons are usually very peaceful fish, I have had mine for over 7 years and never had a problem. I have however found invertebrates such as shrimp quite difficult to keep they do seem to be much more sensative to water quality and the minerals in your tank. I do add Aquarium salt if I'm keeping invertebrates.

I would also have though with 12 Neons your tank is fully stocked and the shrimp might have been too much.

I'm not sure but 19 creatures in the tank seems alot. For example my tank is 90 litres and I have 4 neons, 4 black neons, 2 glow lights and 1 male guppy with 3 females plus 4 babies. I have a separate tank for other guppy babies.

Ahh you must be gutted losing those cherries

Where did you get the new plants?   did you rinse them in fresh water before adding them? some need a good soak or several rinses before being added to the tank.

Many plants are treated with pesticides before being shipped to this country and this could be the cause of the shrimps demise.

I use these forums - some very knowledgeable people there they'll help you with all aspects of your tank

Thank you very much for all your advice and the links to the informative forums.

Madz, i will indeed look into how many creatures will live happily in my tank, and not take the advice from my local fish store this time.

Aderynglas,i was indeed gutted. I got the plants from the aquarium department of a local garden centre. I think you may be right about the plants being the cause. While i was sorting out the plants to put then in the tank i got called away and i now have a feeling that i forgot to rinse them when i got back to finishing the planting.

On a positive note i have now spotted two live cherries, not great but better than i originally thought.

Thanks again
