My Son has just bought an adorable black Labrador. His name is Jasper and he is 11 weeks old. He is gorgeous, I just wish we were younger so that we could get one. We have had dogs all our lives until about 8 years ago, and then thought it was not fair to have a young dog and because we have young grandchildren, we were always dubious about getting an older dog. I have tried to put a photo of his, but so far have failed.
Why can't you have one just cos you are getting older ?? My nan didn't get a cat because of this now 20 years later at 90 regrets it as she could have had at least one in that time
Go talk to Dogs Trust about your needs for a dog. They are very willing to re-home dogs with 'older' people and will make sure you don't choose one that's not good with children.
Jasper is GORGEOUS! Just love snuggly puppy faces!
What a cutie, can't see no reason why you can't get another dog we got our golden retriever Barney from the retriever rescue centre he was 5 when we got him and at the time our granddaughter was only 2 what a wonderful duo they were, he was fantastic with the next 2 grandchildren that came along but sadly Barney went the rainbow bridge in February
Ain't it grand when you see children and dogs grow together..The bonds forged together in infancy can last a lifetime....
My old Springer(sadly gone now) was bought at just the right time for my kids to grow with her..That dog absolutely loved the four of them...Never even entered her head to harm them even during all the rough and tumble play times that went on...
The dogs temperament plays a big part in that of course...You see all those video's on YBF and the like where the big Lab(or whatever) is totally devoted to the youngster...Warms the heart to see it...
Jasper and your grandkids will bond like that I'm sure...

You will not get a more layed back animal and just because the were runners before retiring doesn't mean they need a lot of exercise. They are really wonderful animals and become a member of the family and not a pet!
You also get involved with a great group of likeminded people and help is always close by if you encounter any problems with your dog.
And I echo the thoughts and musings on here. Why not get another dog?
I've got my my first dog, he's now 10 months old and is full of character... So much so, I wonder why I didn't get one years ago. Now I wonder how come I can get so 'goo goo' over a dog.
