Hi my daughter is going to Sharm for two weeks and would like advice on which currency to use for tipping.Apparantly small denom EG Pounds difficult to come by. Some suggest pound coins or one dollar bills. Anyone had experience of this? Also what is best way to take spending money,she has been advised to take £ notes and put them ito a cash machine in the resort which converts them to Eg pounds and gives the best exchange rate?

The trip advisor site recommends tipping in local currency.
The reason being that they have to save up the money and lose out changing it otherwise.

Trip advisor also says small denom notes can be hard to come by and you won't get any in the UK
I should have mentioned that her holiday is All Inclusive ,but she likes to tip for good service.

Also it may be worth bearing in mind washing hands after handling money.My friends went there and one had a terrible stomach and the other didnt.Both did the same with drinks and food but only one handled the money and that person got the bug.

That's a really good point lockie , that crossed my mind when I got her some Egypt pounds from Thos Cook and saw the state of the notes.Will make sure she has some sanitising gel.

The usual thing in Sharm is to leave a tip in your room at the end of the holiday for the housekeeping staff. This may also be the norm for restuarant/bar staff in all inclusive.

I think that to ensure that you are going to be well looked after ,by bar and restaurant staff , from day 1 you need to tip from day 1.House. Keeping at end of stay prob yes although your reg housekeeper might be having a day off on your last day...getting complicated now!!

they'll take whatever tip you decide to give them,(English,Egyptian)if all inclusive tip the staff when you first use the facilities and they'll look after you throughout your stay.Cash points are readily available and as per the norm you'll get a better rate than over here.However i'd advise she takes an amount of english notes(as backup) which they readily accept but beware SOME Eygptians will try ripping you off on the exchange rate if using sterling.

Just back from Sharm and we used pound coins to tip with mainly,and when we had some small Egyptian notes used them

When we stayed there we were approached by a guy at the airport holding out pound coins we thought it was a scam so we ignored him.

Once in resort we discovered why - £1 coin tips got us better service.

The waiting staff will then change their coins for paper & then convert to egyptian currency at the banks-

since we have pased this tip on to our firend who have been

Any odd €uros lying around from other hols work just as well. Tipping the barman on the first night usually ensures fuller measures, but make sure he's a full timer.

we used Egyptian pounds. hen we got there we tipped the Porter with I think it was 10 Egyptian pounds which then was about £1 and he thought all his Christmases had come at once. e had fantastic service all week long.

I must admit I hated it there, be aware of the men at the airport who do hassle you, but you must just be firm. We also went into Narma Bay, which I found to be just like any seaside resort, so we left before the hotel minibus arrived, so got a taxi back, that was another experience I certainly would not repeat.

Hiya,
I was in Egypt for Easter.
At the airport on the way out I bought American dollars in 1 dollar bills. Just for tipping.
In Egypt the person tipped cannot exchange coins into local currency ; ; ;but can small notes. Any small denomination note will do.

The dollars were hugely appreciated, we got massively great service - way above the actual ' value' of the tip.

Locals holding out pound coins is usually them hoping you can exchange them into local currency, they are of no real use to them.
