I'd try bleeding the system first, it might just be an airlock, also depending on the boiler and system check the expansion vessel pressure is correct, some are like a football or bladder that counter the pressure in the system, they expand and contract in tune with the heat of the system, if they are low on pressure they can give a false low reading of the system pressure when cold, you top the system up thinking it has lost water and it warms up there is no where for the vessel to expand and it causes a build of pressure ( which can cause the banging and clonking), opens the relief valve and dumps the water out,usually more than you have put in, when it cools you have a low system pressure reading and a pile of air in it. There should be a valve like a car tyre on the expansion tank . As I said it depends on the system whether this applies to you.
If the problem still persists go for the flush and rinse.
