Not sure about getting the insurance group using the car registration but as long as you know the make and model you can get the insurance group HERE

Be aware the insurance group is not a reliable way of assessing if insurance will be cheap. The group is based on how cheap a car is to fix, anti theft measures etc.
We have just swapped a group 1 car for one in group 9 and the new car insurance is a lot less. This will be due to claims profile of each car. Group 1 driven by lots of younger drivers, who claim more group 9 by older drivers.
So get some actual quotes based on cars you are looking at.

My 17 year old son's just bought a 1.2 litre, 15 month old, group 8 car. Insurance quotes were very similar to 1 litre, 10 year old group 1 cars.

I found this many years ago when I first started driving! New cars are safer and cheaper to fix then old cars.

http://www.thatcham.org/research/index.jsp?page=33 is where you will find the information used by Insurance companies, as stated on the ABI (Association of British Insurers) website.
However, the previous posts suggesting this is only one factor is confirmed here https://www.abi.org.uk/Insurance-and-savings/Products/Motor-insurance/How-insurers-calculate-the-price-of-your-premium
Hope that helps.
