some of those actually are too bright, you can buy rally spec ones that aren't legal for road use.

As the law stands (maybe stood), any lights on that aren't headlights (55w max) had to be less than 20w. LEDs are much less than that and can be as bright as they want really.

My new Fiesta has LED strip DTRLs  - they turn off when the headlights come on (it's got automatic lights, so they decide when to come on!).  Mine is a high-spec model, so has LED, but I know the lower spec models use the side-lights as DTRLs.

nope, never has been AFAIK, extra "driving lights" can be whatever you want, but must be able to be switched off completly, I have 4 x 100W lamps on my defender, the can be used with the hi-beam, by themselves, or off altogether.

Fog lights must comply with beam patterns, and switching arrangements as well, these are restriced to 55W IIRC.

neither front fogs, or auxiliary lighting are checked at MOT time.

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (and subsequent) actually restrict the maximum wattage for all front facing lights to 55w. (on a 12v system)
They make interesting reading!

They are on some cars particularly the Citroen I've noticed but on the Volvo they're not. I had to have one replaced about 6 months ago at the cost of £12 but whether Volvo will adapt to LED's in the future or I don't know but it would be as step in the right direction I think regarding the elimination of bulb filaments.




I had a 1994 Volvo 850 for 8 years with daylight running lights that were a bulb, in the 8 years I changed only 1 bulb.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Am I to understand that an object generally about 6 feet wide by 6 feet high is virtually invisible in daylight unless it has lights on it?
Incidentally, while driving today, a car on the other side of the road was waiting to turn right (across my path of travel). It had daylight running lights - and because of these, the (working) turn indicator could not be seen until less than twenty feet away! Fortunately the driver was not one of the "I'm signalling so I have right of way" class, because - due to the daylight running lights - his signal was not visible.
I didn't notice what make/model of vehicle, but in this case an extremely dangerous hazard has been created, rather than a "safety" feature.

If all front facing lamps are limited to 55W, then why are H4 headlight bulbs 55W dip 60W main?

Sorry.

They also are supposed to be E marked, and there is only 1 manufacturer currently producing an E marked 100w bulb, and they are mega expensive (Piaa)
