Just because certain roads are National Speed Limit. It doesn't mean that is safe to do so.
Lanes twist and turn, if one cannot see far ahead, because of high hedges and cannot see what is coming towards you or see what is in front of you. Then it is unsafe to drive at speed, as breaking cannot be done safely.
Fatalities are higher on Rural roads. I was always taught to expect the unexpected. On rural roads, expect farm vehicles, horses, cyclists, walkers.
I am sure no-one would like to plough into these situations.
Caution is the word, Drive carefully, please. Locals or Visitors alike.

OMG! No-one has suggested that one shouldn't drive without due care and attention to road conditions so why bring up NSLs? I find more people ignoring speed limits in towns and cities than I do on rural roads.
There are a good many reasons why there are more fatalities on rural roads for a start many of them receive far less money (far few vehicles on them) than main routes - try some of the A roads in Scotland and compare the amount of money spent per death with commuter routes - and I have total contempt for the attitude that rural roads don't count. Yes there's always going to be fools but they're not confined to rural roads.
You quoted farm vehicles pedestrians cyclists and livestock on rural roads - have you seen the behaviour of drivers cyclists and pedestrians in urban areas? Come off it. It's as broad as it's long.
I's over 12 years since I was in Cornwall - not the easiest place to get to from Mull and yes the lanes were as I recall more twisty and hedges hid granite dykes plus passing places often aren't well defined as possibly where I live. There is nothing new there and of course one should drive responsibly. It is the wholesale condemnation of local and the term familiarity breeds contempt that is so patronising. Believe me if you lived with tractors horses cyclist and pedestrians not to mention cows sheep and lambs and 24 stone plus red deer on your local roads you wouldn't be saying that and that we all charge round like maniacs. And whilst I don't know about mobile phone reception in Cornwall - you'll be damn lucky to get mobile reception on most of Mull.
STRs put a lot of people off whether through the physical size of their units or their own capabilities - fair enough. I respect that judgement call and I think I've posted enough times to try and help those who want to come and have reservations about STRs. I wouldn't be repeating the issues here and the measures the Police are taking with drivers who are breaking the law and driving without due care and attention if I wanted folks not to have a nasty surprise because they are ignorant of the rules. I love the idea of people coming here and enjoying our island but I see no reason why those of us who do live in "tourist" areas (and not by choice) should be expected to have our lives totally disrupted by those who cannot cope with what should be basic driving skills or an attitude that because it's alien to one's experience everyone should be subject to their idea of what should happen.
I have mentioned in past and got shot down for it visitors being so ignorant of the rules of STR that they hold up emergency vehicles. Two weeks ago this happened to my Mum in the ambulance taking her to hospital under blues and twos. If Mum hadn't made it the driver that blocked the ambulance would have been in very dire trouble.
Much is said on this forum about respecting others - well?

Your rant proves a point. We are all on the same side. You have bad driving, anywhere you go.
You have misquote me on one point. You quoted " Familiarity breeds contempt" The word I used was "Complacency" This can be related to any area.
The area where I live in, There is a good mixture of dairy farms and Stables. Tractors are a common feature, and cyclists.
I had a someone over take me, going at a break neck speed. So fast, I thought he would come off. You know what, he was on the ground. The idiot took the turn too fast.
There is always crashes, upturn cars in fields, near where I live.
Where I kept my horses, there were many crashes, and by the pub, I use to use; all because, they did not respect the bends.
You have had a personal family involvement, through thoughtless drivers, which was life or death situation.
We have that on any roads, which you have pointed out. Each type of roads have their specific dangers.
I am well aware that there can be bad cyclists, pedestrians and so on.
I have experienced bad drivers as a horse rider and cyclist.
As well as bad pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers and motor bikers, putting their lives in danger with their own actions of stupidity.
The reason I mentioned the NSL was: At times, lanes can be driven safely at 40mph not the 60 which is legally allowed.
Sometimes one cannot tell how tight some bends are , or not as tight one thinks, as the hedges are high and cannot follow or see the contour. Why is it wrong for me to mention this.
Yes we all have the Sunday drivers, who drive so slow.
You find these drivers on any road. Urban, rural, motorways. They do not realise, they put others in danger, as at times, this type of driving can be classed as dangerous; they are in their own little bubble.
