Just because certain roads are National Speed Limit. It doesn't mean that is safe to do so.

Lanes twist and turn, if one cannot see far ahead, because of high hedges and cannot see what is coming towards you or see what is in front of you. Then it is unsafe to drive at speed, as breaking cannot be done safely.

Fatalities are higher on Rural roads. I was always taught to expect the unexpected.   On rural roads, expect farm vehicles, horses, cyclists, walkers.
I am sure no-one would like to plough into these situations.
Caution is the word, Drive carefully, please. Locals or Visitors alike.
Familiarity breeds complacency.

OMG! No-one has suggested that one shouldn't drive without due care and attention to road conditions so why bring up NSLs? I find more people ignoring speed limits in towns and cities than I do on rural roads.

There are a good many reasons why there are more fatalities on rural roads for a start many of them receive far less money (far few vehicles on them) than main routes - try some of the A roads in Scotland and compare the amount of money spent per death with commuter routes - and I have total contempt for the attitude that rural roads don't count. Yes there's always going to be fools but they're not confined to rural roads.

You quoted farm vehicles pedestrians cyclists and livestock on rural roads - have you seen the behaviour of drivers cyclists and pedestrians in urban areas? Come off it. It's as broad as it's long.

I's over 12 years since I was in Cornwall - not the easiest place to get to from Mull and yes the lanes were as I recall more twisty and hedges hid granite dykes plus passing places often aren't well defined as possibly where I live. There is nothing new there and of course one should drive responsibly. It is the wholesale condemnation of local and the term familiarity breeds contempt that is so patronising. Believe me if you lived with tractors horses cyclist and pedestrians not to mention cows sheep and lambs and 24 stone plus red deer on your local roads you wouldn't be saying that and that we all charge round like maniacs. And whilst I don't know about mobile phone reception in Cornwall - you'll be damn lucky to get mobile reception on most of Mull.

STRs put a lot of people off whether through the physical size of their units or their own capabilities - fair enough. I respect that judgement call and I think I've posted enough times to try and help those who want to come and have reservations about STRs. I wouldn't be repeating the issues here and the measures the Police are taking with drivers who are breaking the law and driving without due care and attention if I wanted folks not to have a nasty surprise because they are ignorant of the rules. I love the idea of people coming here and enjoying our island but I see no reason why those of us who do live in "tourist" areas (and not by choice) should be expected to have our lives totally disrupted by those who cannot cope with what should be basic driving skills or an attitude that because it's alien to one's experience everyone should be subject to their idea of what should happen.

I have mentioned in past and got shot down for it visitors being so ignorant of the rules of STR that they hold up emergency vehicles. Two weeks ago this happened to my Mum in the ambulance taking her to hospital under blues and twos. If Mum hadn't made it the driver that blocked the ambulance would have been in very dire trouble.

Much is said on this forum about respecting others - well?

I apologise for the ire in my previous post though hopefully the majority amongst you will realise just how terrifying it is to have a much loved family member's life threatened by an ignorant driver. If Mum had died as a result of that driver's selfishness the book would have been thrown at him.

It was not directed at Heath63 but purely to point out that drivers should be competent and not think coz they can't cope they have the right to endanger others ' lives through their lack of knowledge and/or their prejudices as to what is the right speed etc.

Can I just say Cornwall does not have a monoploy on rural lanes.EVERY County in the UK has them. I am born & bred in Kent & apart from a spell in the Army have lived most my life here.My work takes me into the boonies along all manner of rural lanes. I drive appropriatly . Anybody who thinks its ok to speed along them ( I dont care if its a National speed limit rd.. its a limit NOT a target) just because they live there is being extremley foolhardy. All this talk of "grockles" & "emmets" is offensive & just furthers my resolve never to go back there some 14 yrs after my last visit. The phrase " dont bite the hand that feeds you" springs to mind.

THUMPER.

Your rant proves a point. We are all on the same side. You have bad driving, anywhere you go.

You have misquote me on one point. You quoted " Familiarity breeds contempt" The word I used was "Complacency"   This can be related to any area.

The area where I live in, There is a good mixture of dairy farms and Stables. Tractors are a common feature, and cyclists.

I had a someone over take me, going at a break neck speed. So fast, I thought he would come off.   You know what, he was on the ground. The idiot took the turn too fast.
There is always crashes, upturn cars in fields, near where I live.
Where I kept my horses, there were many crashes, and by the pub, I use to use; all because, they did not respect the bends.

You have had a personal family involvement, through thoughtless drivers, which was life or death situation.

We have that on any roads, which you have pointed out. Each type of roads have their specific dangers.

I am well aware that there can be bad cyclists, pedestrians and so on.

I have experienced bad drivers as a horse rider and cyclist.
As well as bad pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers and motor bikers, putting their lives in danger with their own actions of stupidity.

The reason I mentioned the NSL was: At times, lanes can be driven safely at 40mph not the 60 which is legally allowed.

Sometimes one cannot tell how tight some bends are , or not as tight one thinks, as the hedges are high and cannot follow or see the contour.   Why is it wrong for me to mention this.

Yes we all have the Sunday drivers, who drive so slow.
You find these drivers on any road. Urban, rural, motorways. They do not realise, they put others in danger, as at times, this type of driving can be classed as dangerous; they are in their own little bubble.

If you think about it, we are all tourists.   When we go and visit places.

That includes yourself when you go camping ficklejade.
The way you are talking. No one should be going on holiday; because we become tourists and problematic to the locals.

We are all emmets.

I have never heard of that term before. Just learnt it is a derogative term.

If it wasn't for the tourists and the money they bring to the area a lot of the white van men wouldn't have a job at all.

Emmets is the cornish word for ants, they get in everything and everywhere as my family down there told me.

It doesnt surprise me when something defended the pricing because of the seasonal trades but you cannot justify cheaper drinks in a pub because you are local over someone who isnt. Its pure discrimination and if it was done because of skin colour instead of because of where you live it would be all over the news.Just take a couple of bills in to prove you are local and you too can have a "loyalty card" entitling you to cheap drinks.

Ive been going to see the family down there for over 20 years now so spent a fair bit of money over the years so shouldnt i be entitled to a loyalty card too ?
What if it was the other way round ? You come up to london and pay more than we do then see how it goes with the shoe on the other foot ?

Thats my point, we as tourists are quite often treated with contempt and ive had my fair share of it over the years and its only when my cornish family are with me that it changes instantly.
I also know how many of the shops close up for the winter and the towns are unrecognisable out of season, very bleak in the winter.
Work is tough too but i also notice a complete lack of get up and go or positive spirit to try new things amongst my cornish relatives.I go down there and see opportunities galore, is it any wonder outsiders go down there and open business's ? Its those same business's that employ local workers btw.

You cant have it both ways.

Lockie, are you joking or serious, about pricing. Nahhh you are joking.

That is so funny if it is true. Close up for the winter, then complain, that there are visitors in the Summer. Then have a 2 pricing systems, hehehhehehhe.

Is that actually legal?
It sounds that without tourists, the area would be bankrupt. I am glad I live too far away to visit. If that's the welcome I would receive. Then no thanks.

Many seaside towns or tourist areas close for the winter. In Cheddar Gorge a lot of shops shut Oct until March or April.

There isn't much other than tourist towns in large swathes of Cornwall so they have a large reliance on tourists to survive.

You would not have a large number of haulage companies there for instance, terrible roads for 6 months of the year and miles to travel before you reach anywhere.

look for yourself if you think its a joke

Locals get them free for many places, i only know about it as my uncles had loads of different ones for different places last time i was visiting.£2 per pint is a lot better than over £3.I would hsappily pay the £3 if everyone else was too.

Of course most tourist areas close for the Winter. Businesses are not viable during these months. Rely on visitors through the Summer months, for income.

There shouldn't be discrimination. Should be one price for all. Otherwise, a lot of people will be priced out, if on the budget.

Unless that is the whole idea.   Then a lot of family business would go under.

Don't see a problem with the Newquay Loyalty Card (one of those listed in lockie's link) - "The Newquay Loyalty Cards are provided by the Newquay Business Improvement District and are free to locals and visitors alike."

Pretty much the same idea as in Lichfield, for example, and, I imagine, many other places.

Just read your post, Bob.

I have just googled emmet. It is Old English derived from aemete meaning ant.

I agree that NSL are literally that a limit not a target and are dependant on road conditons and users.
It seems that some people cannot see past the end of their nose these days.
Just the other day a driver pulled out in front of me crossing my offside I looked at her, didn't flash lights or toot the horn. The torrent of abusive language and hand waving was unbelievable.
Everyday I see something on the school run 20mph zones being ignored, mobile phones in use, pulling out in front of emergency vehicles with blues and twos going.
Coming home today with the camper someone nearly hit us as he was overtaking parked cars and at the same time trying to go between the middle of two speed bumps.
I think the blame lies in the standard of people's driving whether old, young, male, female, foreign or local.
The road imitates life, some people don't have the time of day for others.
