My wife and I are both public sector employees(me MOD and her NHS) there have been lots of redundancies. Trouble is the workload has not decreased, we are now very shortstaffed and they are not allowing recruitment.
No pay rise for the last few years and we might get 1%
But we are both retiring next year as we are old enough and have decided enough is enough!
Prior to my joining MOD I was in the RAF, there were a large number made redundant! The army are shedding more this year too.
MPs are public sector employees-perhaps they should look at their numbers?
I say give the MPs their rise but cut all expenses-they choose to work in London their lookout! Either that or 1% only!
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
It should be remembered that MPs VOLUNTEERED to do the job and no one forced them to do it. They knew what the salary and perks were before they volunteered to do the job.
IMHO pay rises should have been restricted to those that could produce results and also those that actually listen to their constituents.
I think some of these public sector people should try living life in the real world. Where pay rises are a distant memory and pensions are a luxury.
Another who thinks public sector staff are on good pay and pensions!!
I'm unemployed after 36 years in a low paid public sector job, earning more than OH too. We will never retire. We can't get day jobs. OH does evening cleaning. I will look for evening cleaning come September.
Always been low pay earners. With financial help from parents we had enough for a small house, two kids, a car and UK holidays.
When our pensions start we will continue cleaning. We have no choice.
There's a well paid, big pension public sector worker for you.
missing the point kimmie, no offense intended. But a lot of public sector workers bang on about having to pay into pensions longer and not getting a payrise etc etc etc. But many non public sector workers have had pay cuts and cant afford a pension.... I am one of them. I will be working full time until I am dead, its a fact, not a great fact but it is one just the same.
------------- Never look down at anybody....
.....unless to offer a hand, to help them up
No offence taken. But it is surprising how people, when you say you are/were in the public sector assume you are well paid and will receive a high pension.
They don't realise a lot of us are low paid admin, carers caretakers, etc. I've paid into my pension for 36 years, now redundant at 55 I will struggle to find another office job because of my age.
I believe we are going back to the Victorian days. OH and me, like a lot of people, will be working for the rest of our lives to keep ourselves going.
You know what you have to admire this government! They have managed very cleverly to get us to blame the public sector for the problems. Yet at the same time they are millionaires or in Osborne's case billionaires who have no idea what it is like to want for anything. Course Gove & Clegg can say they don't want the pay rise they don't need it!
When we learn to stop believing the hype and looking to blame each other then maybe we'll understand that it's the politicians that make the laws & the decisions that are leaving us with high bills, food poverty and unhappiness.
