As the daughter and grand daughter of Durham Miners I am proud to say that this was the scene yesterday, when along with the other members of Murton Colliery Band we played at the 129th Durham Miners Gala, where we escorted the Murton Lodge Banner through the streets of Murton and Durham followed by approx 200 people from Murton Village. On parade there were 124 Banners, of which 60 were Durham mining banners 3 Notts Banners 3 Yorkshire banners 1 Northumberland Banner 57 other banners and making the noise 55 bands The streets and race course were packed. The Sun shone brightly on us and a superb day was had by all. To say there are no collieries left now in the Durham Coalfield, events like this show just how proud we are of our heritage and hope they continue to be supported for many years to come
