The whole idea of forums is to stimulate debate, which you have succeeded in.
I think we should be able to add caveats to our posts like "know it alls need not comment" or " Victor Meldrews need not read further" etc etc
If nothing else it will make people stop and think if they belong in those categories!!
Now there's an idea!
I actually don't think most people come here for a debate, though they can be stimulating if there's any point in them. I believe most of us come to the forum to share, whether that be debate, photos, a whine about a camping nightmare or losing our pet. Like any community, we all bring different things to the table.
I don't think I exactly invited a debate about the Third World when I had a grump about being waterless for six hours!
Late to the party on this one... though I was aware of FoO's problem. Everything's relative, granted, but in this heat in this country when you're used to being able to flush the loo and get drinking water from the tap, it's a jolt when you can't do it! The elderly and vulnerable are particularly at risk in such situations. I've just upgraded to being a three-water-butt household; they're only about a third full at the moment but at least if the water went off I'd be able to flush the loo a good few times - a handy back-up. The mention of keeping some bottled water with long sell-by date is also a good one. Generally we are blessed with reliable services, but keeping a little emergency stash is a good idea.
------------- Always edited for sloppy typing - when I spot it!

There speaks a woman with first-hand experience of unreliable utilities in an African mission compound, and also on a remote Scottish sheep farm. You know a thing or two about suddenly and regularly having to do without the things we're used to having at our fingertips here.
(I promise not to call you "Three-butt Hedgey" now, though. Doesn't sound very flattering, does it? )
I must say the Elsan Blue worked very well. Kept the loo hygienic and fresh-smelling for the duration of the supply failure. I wouldn't like to use it for longer than six hours, though. We were fortunate that in that time it only had... ahem... 'light' use!
