In 2 weeks I am having 7 teeth extracted under sedation, as I have a real phobia of the dentist, can anybody tell me of their experiences please.

I have had dental sedation quite a few times now due to phobia and I have to say it wasn't too bad.
The worst bit is putting the cannula in, as always, but I always look away, when the valium goes in it works pretty quickly.
Make sure you have some decent painkillers at home for when the anasetic (SP?) wears off as it will hurt unfortunately.
Not sure what else to put, but if you've questions I can try to answer from my experience x

I've had this done for wisdom tooth extraction. It was wonderful. I can't remember a thing about it. Apparently they could not stop me talking thought the procedure! Not that I can recall anything. I would highly recommend this and would definitely opt for this if I needed any other teeth removed. Good luck and let us know how it goes

Hey,

I am sorry that you are going through so much worry - quite a major portion of the experience is created by our own imagination, which often related the obtained informational details with the previously encountered experiences (the memory blueprint for the particular situation). A large number of us have the memories from movies or the childhood experience. These days, the dentistry has advanced to the level where you are given the sedatives to relax and allow the doctor to perform a simple surgery - do not allow your own thoughts to increase your blood pressure by rethinking all the possible horrible scenarios, instead, focus on understanding certain aspects of it, such as that most people end up feeling a sense of relief after the surgery, you will look and feel better after a very common procedure. Optimistic thoughts and humor are the best medicine!

Thank you all for your replies, my phobia started when a teenager in the 60,s, they were butchers.lol.
when these teeth are removed I will have a new top denture, which of course is another worry, but heyho, the joys of being a pensioner, will let you know how it all goes.

Had it twice and it's wonderful!! Can't remember a thing. Just make sure you have someone with you and you aren't alone when you get home. Then just sleep!

Had 13 milk teeth out under gas in the 1950's. Mother pushed me home in a push chair. That put me off dentists for life but I do go regularly and let them get on with it. Dentistry wasn't as good in the 50's 60's but better than 100 years earlier.

Our dog had 30 out under sedation. He didn't seem too bad. felt a bit sorry for himself for a couple of days.

My dentist who I have been with for about 4 years is brilliant, she has helped me so much, have had one extraction, and a filling with her, and see her every 3 months for a scale, and polish, but 7 teeth was too much for me, so she is sending me to a private dentist for the sedation, ok it has cost me 295 pounds for this treatment, and then will have to pay 214 for my dentures which was a shock, but because I am not on any benefits have to pay even though I am a pensioner, should,nt have worked all my life lol.

My 11 year old son needed 3 baby teeth extracted and he received sedation via gas. He was very relaxed and so didn't flinch when the needle was put in his gum to administer the anaesthetic.
he was given oxygen for a few minutes afterwards to clear the gas from his system and then walked out of the dentist happy as Larry!

My OH had dental sedation for removal of a tooth which had broken off right down in the gum. He said it was great, but I was waiting outside and as the sedation wore off I heard him shouting mild swear words at the dentist and nurse. I was aghast, as he doesn't normally swear at all! When the nurse brought him out to be driven home, still very woozy, she said "Goodness, he's a lively one, isn't he?"

He didn't recall any of this, and slept most of the rest of the day. He couldn't believe what a funny effect it had on him! Wish I'd had a mobile phone in those days to record the sound effects!

Hope the op. goes well, Penny.

Well I have survived, had it done yesterday, I can remember the dentist injecting the sedation, and nothing else, it was like having a GA, next thing I remember was my daughter coming in the surgery, she said I looked like I had had a bloody good night on the wine !!!!.
The dentist and nurse walked me to my daughters car, and apparently I said to my dentist....wish I was 10 years younger......
Felt fine, and just took 2 painkillers before bed, had a fab sleep, no pain this morning, hope I have,nt spoken too soon, and yes he was dishy lol.
