Mid Wales is not too far from the Midlands, about 2 hours and a nice drive. There are some lovely towns, Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, New Quay, Tywyn etc. Some beautiful beaches (not sure which are dog friendly though), and some fantastic country walks. If you want somewhere nearer there is the whole of Shropshire- beautiful. Look at the Campsite search on here for different areas.
