Liverpool/cornwall one way 4 people one way 300 miles £640
Bristol/Gran Canaria 4 people return 6000 miles £702
And the sun shines most of the time in the canaries.

What is 'split ticketing' please? If you have to get off the train at a station en-route to buy the next portion of the journey, you might miss the train. Travelling is hard enough without hanging about at railway stations.

Split ticketing is simple really.
Say the train is going from A to Z, and stops at C,H & N.
You purchase a ticket from A - H, then H-Z these two tickets sometimes work out cheaper than the one ticket from A -Z.
You just need to find out where the train you want stops then try variations of the fares to see which if any work out cheaper.
You don't have to get off the train, but the train MUST stop where the tickets change, so you couldn't buy a ticket from A-J then J-Z as the train doesn't stop at J.
You purchase your tickets in advance, and collect them at the starting station.
Hope that garble makes sense lol

If you were coming back, nobody should ever buy off-peak singles - off-peak returns are usually only £1 more than the single
Split ticketing is often only a benefit for day trips, where a cheap day return is a lot cheaper than an off-peak return,
Advance tickets are available around 12 weeks ahead but, if there are any left, can be bought up to 6pm on the day before your journey. Obviously, the earlier you book, the cheaper the available tickets may be. Beware though that advance tickets are train specific so, if you miss the booked train, your ticket is not valid on a later train, unless you missed it because of problems on an earlier train.

Francophile
I benefited from split ticketing but I had to travel through London not sure how that factors in.
My journey was Wallington to Clacton out on a Monday and back on Friday. Saved quite a bit, by splitting.
Ended up with tickets from Wallington to Stratford, via Canada water ( that's a cheaper route as not going into central London) Also saved a bit on this route using our Oysters, as they work out cheaper.
We then had tickets from Stratford to Clacton.
Wallington to Stratford was paid as we went, butt we had returns for the other part of the journey

I do split ticketing to travel from Bath to London....its really easy, you just have to play around and find out where best to break the tickets.
A recent example with a peak ticket (flexi rtn) Bath to London was £160. If i split this at Didcot it became £94 for the same train.
You dont get off...but you do have a pack of cards to show each time
It even alocated the same seat on each train so i dont even move seat despite having differnt tickets for each leg.
