It was an empty autobahn, I was in lane 1, no other vehicles around except for a speed merchant in Lane 3 doing approximately 150 mph. He was in lane 3 which he must have believed was the safest place for that sort of speed as if anything had moved from lane 1 to lane 2 to overtake, he could still continue in lane 3.
On the subject of speeding, 10 mph over the limit on a clear dry motorway, no problem. 10 mph over the limit outside a school at school leaving time should attract a heavy fine and a driving ban.
All he needs is a front wheel blow out at that speed. I quote 80mph as that is what everyone is doing and if they tell you they got done for 80 they are being economical with the truth. A bit the people who tell you after failing the driving test that it was for "just the one little thing" Oh Yeah?
Yes, happened to a friend of mine and he said he over-reacted and that was how he lost control. They're more common than you think. But a blow out at 150 you don't need to hit anything, you are going over for a significant number of cartwheels! Next time you are passing someone on the motorway look at the drivers hands , some steer with one finger (elbow on the door) which probably looks "cool". We saw a guy steering with his knees. These are the unfortunate souls who never recall what happened to them as they are loaded into the ambulance.
By the way, has anybody had or do they know anybody who has ever had a front wheel blow out?
Yes - I had one on the A1M a couple of years ago, whilst overtaking a lorry at 70mph (me, not the lorry) Front O/S tyre disintegrated but, apart from the noise, it was quite an uneventful experience, possibly because they were low profile tyres. Tyre was only 3 months old and had done just over 2000 miles. Tyre fitter reckoned that I had probably got a slow puncture and, as the tyre slowly deflated, it had overheated and burst.
